Will this melt my tent?? - HPS Help Needed

I'm [finally] switching from a blurple marshydro light to a 600W HPS that someone was gracious enough to give me. My problem currently is that my plant is WAY too big, and I'm running out of space in the tent.

B/c of that, I raised the LED I was using as high as possible (within 3" of the top of the tent). It was fine since it was LED. I just set up the HPS rig and it just occurred to me that these things throw off WAY more heat than LED.

Can anyone tell me if this hood would get so hot that it would pose a hazard? Should I play it safe and just stick with the LED for this grow? I'm also worried that the excess heat will burn the plant (you can see in one picture that it's probably only about a foot away or so).

Help much needed and appreciated!

I've got a 6" clip fan (dinky little thing, you can see it in the pic) up top, and a 12" oscillating fan at the bottom. I've seen other people talk about 'air cooling' lights, is this meant specifically with ducts/high CFM fans?

Id say it wont cause a fire but it will get hotish, a fan would cool matters but if any doubt exists i simply dont do it which is the advice id give, just use the led.

If you had a dimmable id think a 400watt would work better as my hood barely gets hot more warm but my 600watt puts a definite hot spot directly above the bulb.

Being close to a bulb means any heat energy has had little distance to spread as it too obeys the inverse law. Rarely do our hoods hit gnition temps for mylar tents and most fires come from bulb contact :-)

I would get an inline and an air hood/cool tube personally.. Should be able to find both for about hundo shipped..

If I remember correctly you're in a legal area right and arent worrying about the carbon filter?

Havin an exhaust to exchange air is a good idea regardless imo

Can't beat that common sense, thank you. I live in a house built in the late 1800's/early 1900's so fires are a source of paranoia for me.

Yeah, I've been looking at them recently. It'll def be my next 'big' purchase for this. I've been researching different fans for about a week now, just need to make up my mind. I don't think I'll need more than 150-180cfm, I'm only using a 2x4x5 and a min. would be 120 by my math.

And yeah, you're right. I'm in New England. Actually researching getting a medical card now too.
 
Ages ago this dilema was picked apart (for those that want to risk fire).

Each material has a rated ignition/melting point normally listed somewhere on google or the product matetial patent/ratings. If you can measure the hottest part of your hood you can place it against the tent if it dosent exceed the tents ignition temperature.
 
K.. that all sounds good.. One thing to be watching is going to be your lights off humidity.. The 600 will raise your temps a bit and I would expect your rh might spike a bit more with lights off.. idk if you're running your lights at night but thats a good way to decrease the temp change and rh spike..


What are your temps looking like with the new lamp?

Air cooled as in air cooled hood, something like this. hps-air-cooled-hood-set-up-with-exhaust-grow-room.jpg

If you truly dont want a hood then you can always look up your tents material and see if you stay within range. (E.g) ballistic nylon starts slowly degrading somewhere at 300f-350f and has a melting point of 400-450f.

I turn lights off from 8pm-8am. I have a dehumidifier running right next to the tent (borrowed one from my mom so I can put off having to buy one) so rh stays right around 50. Highest it got today was 58 I think.

Temps also aren't bad. I've got a weird apartment with two living rooms. Got a small 5000btu AC going in one for my dog during the day and two box fans circulating to keep both rooms cool - stays around 70 in the apartment and 80 or so in the tent. Humidity *does* become an issue when I shut the tent super tight.

Thankfully I have blackout and leather curtains on all the windows/doors in there so I can keep a corner unzipped, and the back vent's cover off against the wall. Keeps it real reasonable. Buds won't be the densest but it's a first grow and they are already super sticky and smell like strawberries so I just wanna keep chuggin' along lol

Oh man. Someday I'll have something like that. For right now, I'll play it safe til I can do more research. Good looks on the melting point tips, again common sense reigns supreme haha
