Ok well this year I did my first winter greenhouse and I wanted to see what has worked out for you guys. Right now my greenhouse is very simple 25 plants in a hoop house with 2 250watt lights for supplemental lighting my plants are in 25 gal smart pots. I'm not new to growing as I have grown outdoor for 2 years now but it is my very first winter crop and I would like to hear your feedback on the winter crop..I would like to post I picture but I don't know how

Just click the "Upload a File" icon next to the "Post Reply" icon. What's your elevation? I'm between 5600-5700ft and had to move it indoors because I was burning 3000w in heaters and was tired of going out with a broom in the middle of the night to knock snow off the roof to keep it from collapsing. So you know, live and learn, I've recently seen some more clever solutions here on RIU to keep a greenhouse warm and strong for cheap in icy conditions.

What else have you seen on here to keep them warm and strong? A fireplace?

Solar Greenhouse. I didn't even think of a pellet stove, that would have been a good idea. I could have paid for half of one with the three electricity bills I got from those heaters.

A pellet stove .
That's awesome, i'd never heard of those. Thanks for throwing that out there! With the cost of gas right now i'll probably just run a generator with a space heater or two out there. How has gas prices been out there wayyy west? I remember being in Cali a couple years ago and in certain areas gas was as high as $7.00/gallon. Out here in CO it's all the way down to $1.56 right now. It's mind blowing, I haven't seen it this low in a lonnngggg time.

Isin't solar pretty expensive to set up initially? I'm sure it'd pay off in the long run though!

Gas is about 3 bucks a gallon right now, 2.50 out in the sticks. Solar looks like a fairly expensive alternative to a regular greenhouse. Somewhere between building a large shed and a greenhouse. Looks like its totally worth it, especially to be able to stay dry and warm while you are working on your plants. The less pleasant it is to work on your plants, the less likely you are to give them as much attention as they need. I got mine in a sunroom here in the house now that I tarped off. I can't believe I didn't do this sooner, the plants get a lot more love now.
