i have 2 tents on the go at the moment, my homebox tent and a homemade 1, i was wondering if id get away with not buying an extractor fan for my homemade tent as i plan to use it only for vegging for 3/4 weeks, because it aint zipped up or anyting so it never really gets too humid in there. so i would just have a rotating deskfan instead

my normal tent will b 400 hps but i will have extractor in there all the time, my homemade for vegging will be a 250w MH or could use a 250hps but i reckon the mh b better save the stretching so do u think i could get away with just desktop fan as its not humid in there cuz iv cut like a little door out the tent so it gets alot of air from my loft

careful whats the dimensions of tent? hows the temps in the room with the tent? i would swap the mh for a t5 in veg. also TONS of lumen are lost with the tent wide open.

FYI, there isn't going to be any noticeable difference between MH or HPS in whether or not the plants stretch. They will stretch trying to get at a light thats too high.
Like rzza says, you'd probably be better off with a good T5 fixture (4' multi-bulb) for veg. Some of them have a respectable amount of lumens.

im under the impression that mh controls the stretch quite a bit but i have NEVER used one so i cannot speak on experience. i have vegged with hps and t5. hps being much better IMO

I've used BOTH MH and HPS through out both phases. I haven't seen any difference that one could quantify between the 2. If there is any difference in yield between them, it would be measured in grams! As far as stretch goes, no difference either. In fact, I ran a side by side test in '09 between the 2, and I couldn't quantify any difference. The test plants were clones of the same plant. But that is based on my observations.
If I had to make a choice, I'd prolly go with the MH, just 'cuz it's easier on the eyes when working under them.

sorry for late reply, the tents about 3 metres wide n about 2 metres high, i have 2 compartments in it, 1 with the door av fut out, and another part where the light wont get out , its never really humid in there, i just thought with fan b better air flow so b better for them in veg, but the guy at my growshop says i wont need extractor for veggin, n im sure he has a degree in holticulture, but i just like seeing a few opionions

also i think the MH saves a bit on electric does it not?

have you thought about 300w cfl's for vegging? nice job. little heat. good for 3-4 wks veg, after that has trouble getting through taller/fuller plants... imho

A thousand watts is a thousand watts, be it MH or HPS. They charge you by the wattage used. Actually you'll get a few more lumens out of HPS if anything. but the difference would be negligible.

na jsut bought the 250 w MH lamp for £15 got a 250 and 400 hps , im growing 4 strawberry kust in my 1x1x2 high homebox tent, so the 400 should do nicely
