YAFG (Yet Another First Grow)

So, here she is, my littlest friend.

Hopefully she'll actually be a she once she's big and strong.

I have NO idea what strain, bagseed from some MJ that the lady brought home from a friends for me a few months ago.

Since he was my only connection in this town, looks like I'm going to make my own.

Anyway, here are a few pictures (sorry about the blurry, using my girlfriends camera which I'm not super familiar with)

Right now I'm using some sprouting pots that came with some sunflower and red bell pepper seeds we were growing a while back. It's just plain WalMart soil - don't remember what exactly.

This is three days after it popped out of the dirt.

I germed about 10, since I have a handful of seeds, and planted two into the pots I had. Only one has sprung up so far after 5 days. I'm keeping them inside a plastic ziplock bag (not sealed, just sitting over the top) as a sort of greenhouse, which I've read helps when sprouting.

I'd love to get some tips on how I can better take care of her and make her turn into a nice producer. I'm not after some huge yield, just like 1/4 oz as that will last me like two months. Do you think that's possible?

Oh, and I'll be building a grow box very very soon so I can control her growth as I see fit.

Hi man are you growing at the window or do you have set up we need a bit more info about your set up

you need to put some more soil in the pot and get the light closer to the plant

Yeah, sorry about that. Right now they're in the window sill looking out at my backyard, which gets a LOT of sun every day. My sunflowers flourished right there so I thought it'd be a good spot until I got the grow box set up in the next week. I'll definitely add more soil in there too.

The box is going to be a PC Stealth box, so I'm not after a large plant. I'll be LSTing it once it's vegging to maximize growth.

I'm looking for a server-size PC case to do this in so I have more room. The box will use two CFL's, probably 42 watt as that's the highest I can find around me.

And, here she is today.

The bottom leaves are turned down a lot... what might that mean?

In the next couple days I'm going to be transferring to a larger pot with the proper amount of soil as well. Then the box should be finished shortly after that and I'll be treating her well then.

Okay, just got back from Wally World and brought home a 6" pot to transplant to, some moisture control potting soil, a plastic box, some CFLs, light fixtures, and some extra seeds (Rosemary and Parsley) because I think I'm also going to start growing other plants too.

I've gotta say, I'm really enjoying the idea of growing a whole host of different plants. It's going to be fun.

Got to work on my little grow box today.

It's built out of a rubbermaid style plastic box. When finished it'll have two fans inside in addition to what's in there now.

I'll also be using some of that stuff that neutralizes the smell so I can grow inside without stinking up the house (don't want people other than those who live here privy to my grow)

What's the name of that stuff anyway? It comes in little plastic jars and you just open up the top and it kills all the smells.

She was looking pretty bad over the last two days (will get a photo up later) and I'm attributing it to nute burn from the miracle grow soil I was using. I just switched over to some soil with no control released ferts, so hopefully this will all go away.

Also, I buried most of her stem so she's much lower in the pot now. I've heard that by doing that the stem will turn into roots over a few weeks and I'll have a much larger root system as a result.

Is that true?

Whoops... Looks like she got overwatered. Thanks to some guys here, I was able to get that fixed - otherwise I would have had no idea.

I just changed the soil again and didn't add any water in. She just went to bed, so when she wakes up, we'll see how well she's doing.

When she starts to droop, that's when I'll add some more water. Anybody care to comment on this plan? I'd like to not kill her off, even though I have plenty more seeds.

Well, she's feeling better today.

I sprayed about 5 sprays of water into her pot, some of which was on her leaves. I don't want her getting too dried out.

She's also got 4 new leaves sprouting, which is really nice.

Well, I just realized that my plant was WAY overheated.

With the lights off, top on, I was at 87 degrees.

So, I moved my box from a non-AC'd room to one with AC and it's dropped down to 77.

Last night I bought some Miracle Grow plant food to give to my girl to help her spring up.

I just fed her about 20 minutes ago, after I drilled a couple small holes in the bottom of the pot to make sure I'm not overwatering her. I mixed up a big batch of the food, fed her some and waited to see if any water came out the bottom - surely enough, a tiny bit did. I was almost right on though. It was just a few drops :)

Here are a couple pictures to show how she's doing.

Those first leaves haven't gotten back to normal, but she's sprung up a bunch of new leaves and is doing great.

So it turns out she LOVES the MC All Purpose grow food.

She has exploded over the last few days. I probably won't be able to get a photo for another two days or so... but I'll post some new ones when I do.

It's great to see her popping new leaves out every single night!

Also, I bought a pH testing kit and some pH up and down to work on the pH level. She looks like she's got some pH issues as some of her leaves serrated edges are curling up a bit.

I just fed her this morning though, so unless somebody can recommend a way to get the pH down without feeding her, it'll have to wait another two days before I can fix that issue.

Urgh... I'm losing her I think.

She's exploded over the last few days, but either she's experiencing a hell of a lot more heat than she can tolerate (Never over 82F) or her pH is fucked.

I just tested her runoff and it's reading a 6.8 pH level. A bit higher than it should be... but I think that's right on the border of where she would be okay at.

I'm adding fans to her box in a few minutes, so any heat issues should disappear.

Also, I sprouted another little lady yesterday and put her into the box as well. It was crazy to see just how much she grew overnight just by being next to the light! My other plant didn't grow that much in 4 days when sitting in the window sill.

People, lighting is important!

Alright... so updates.

Yesyerday I installed fans because of what I expected was heat issues. I'm beginning to think my thermometer sucks though, because it feels like room temperature in my box, even though it's reading much higher.

I added a new sprout to the box too.

You can see all those changes here.

Also, I fimmed the big girl yesterday, and noticed some of the smaller offshoots in the "V"s of the branches really grow out last night. So while her leaves are way curled up, she's still growing well... weird.

Also, I started LSTing her this morning. I used a small piece of wire hanger bent into a U shape to hold her down.

That was just a few hours ago. Haven't checked on her yet though. I'm going to go try my new thermometer, so I'll update afterwards with temps and all that nonsense.

And I just took the temperature, and it was a bit high. But that's because I had an extra bulb in there for my sprout.

If I want more than one bulb in at a time, I'm going to have to find a better way to cool my box down than just with fans.

Ideas anyone?

Here are two new pics of the LST.
