4TH ANNUAL HOMETOWN ENTERTAINMENT SERIES CONCERT TO FEATURE THE REUNITED BAND QUASI MODO
One of the area's most popular bands from the 1980s will be this year's Hometown Entertainment Series Concert featured artist when the recently reunited hard rock band Quasi Modo takes the stage of the Parsons Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. The core of Quasi Modo has centered around the musical partnership of brothers John and Mark Pontious who grew up in rural Erie, Kansas, and attended Labette Community College in Parsons. It was while attending LCC in 1985 that the band was formed when John, on guitar and vocals, and Mark on drums and vocals, invited Cardinal wrestler Steve Loomis to join them on bass. Shortly after the formation, the trio won a school-sponsored talent show using original compositions, and was invited by the LCC Music Department to perform at local high schools as part of their spring tour.
Soon thereafter the band relocated to Tulsa where they began playing regularly on the club circuit, building a growing fan base. After a year in Tulsa the band parted company with Loomis, and the Pontious brothers moved back to Southeast Kansas. Parsons native Jeffery Lansdown was hired as bassist, and the new lineup set about to craft a unique blend of hard rock music that their fans affectionately called, "Modo Music."
During the next few years, Quasi Modo performed shows throughout the Midwest in venues both large and small. They shared the stage with many notable acts including Black Oak Arkansas, Head East, Heaven, Bronx Zoo, and local rocker Donnie Miller. They were even given the opportunity to perform a showcase concert for Warner Brothers Records in Springdale, Arkansas.
Early in 1989 the band headed into the recording studios in Kansas City to work on their first album. Their self-entitled debut was co-produced by Motley Crue's producer Eric Grief, and Matt Watkins of the band Viper. On September 30, 1989, Quasi Modo performed a special album release concert to a large and enthusiastic audience in the newly-renovated Parsons Municipal Auditorium. Sadly, a short time later, the band suffered a terrible tragedy when Jeffery Lansdown was killed in an auto accident. The Pontious brothers would carry on the band for the next couple of years with a variety of replacement musicians on bass.
In 1993, John left the group to move to Indianapolis, Indiana where he studied and worked in the sound engineering field. At this time Mark stepped out from behind his drum kit and began singing lead vocals. Quasi Modo would evolve into a larger unit with the addition of new musicians, until a cohesive lineup was assembled that included Tommy Lawrence on guitar, Johnny "Chainsaw" Reynolds on lead guitar, Mike Segrist on bass, and Mark Brewer on drums. The new Quasi Modo continued to perform throughout the area for the next few years until unceremoniously disbanding.
In 2004, John moved his family back to Southeast Kansas where he started his own business. After talking about reforming the band for several years, in 2009, John and Mark, began working once again as a three-piece band with the addition of Erie native Cameron Testerman on bass. The new lineup, while paying homage to the music that made Quasi Modo popular is looking toward the future, and evolving the music into a unique and thought-provoking hard-edge rock and roll sound.
This marks the fourth year for the Hometown Entertainment Series which was developed as a way to give musicians and entertainers with a connection to Parsons the opportunity to perform in a venue that might otherwise not be available to them. Past concerts have featured performances by pianist Ken Weaver, jazz singer Aaron Keith Stewart, and a reunion concert by the 70's horn band The Sensational Showmen.
Admission to the Quasi Modo concert is free of charge, no ticket is required to attend, all seating will be general admission, and doors are scheduled to open one hour before show time.
The Hometown Entertainment Series Concert is sponsored by the Parsons Arts and Humanities Council and the Parsons Municipal Auditorium, with funding assistance from the Kansas Arts Commission, a State Agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a Federal Agency.
