Reverse osmosis

Can anyone recommend a good, ideally not too expensive, RO machine.

I know little about them. Never used one, never even seen one.

I only need to filter max 100 litres daily. Problem being I need to filter from a reservoir to a reservoir. I can't fit it to my taps I don't think.

Thanks alot

You would do like this and hook up to main water in house. They also have a hose fitting for them too so you could hook up to a faucet head and go from there as well. I'd google ro systems and look at the selections there's many of different types. Prices will vary.

oh yea I'm no plumber either lol, YouTube taught me that. Ps don't be stoned and cut into water line without cutting the water off first it's a mess.

thanks but I still don't get it. I mean, would I need pipes running from 1 room to another? Or would I just slowly filter the water in my kitchen into buckets and carry them into my grow room? Either way it sounds like a lot of hassle.

Is it not possible to just fill my reservoir and pump from the res through the RO machine into a spare res in the same room? Am I being thick?

image.jpg image.jpgThe pipes are already ran in your house just have to find one close to the garden. I'm in basement so mine was easy. The shower head can hook up to an ro system too. Your not being thick, just don't overthink it. All ro does is push water through filters and clean the water. So you'll def need water pressure. As far as lugging water from ro to res could take hours depending on how much water your trying to store. I had a buddy who would hook his up to his shower and has super long water lines from the ro to where his garden was. he would fill his tank up through the day and unhook the system when he had his water stored. Was kinda funny to see blue lines 20 feet long through the house. But gotta work with what you have:)

That looks tidy. Or about as tidy as it can be made. I don't think I can do it. I haven't got a water shut of valve in my house and the one on the street is faulty so there is literally no way of shutting the water off other that directly before each tap.

I only use about 30 litres EOD. I may just carry rain water from my workshop to my house every other day. 6 x 5 litre water bottles should fit it my big rucksac lol.

thanks for your help:-)

I'd go for shower then you can fill buckets in there with ro hooked to shower head. if it overflows the bucket you won't have water all over the place. It's as tidy as I could make it without my dad being like wtf you do to my house lol.

r/o machines need a certain psi usually to be effective; you aren't going to get that from a reservoir and pump most likely. do you have access to a hose bib (garden hose spout)? if so, you can just run a garden hose to an r/o machine in your grow room and then set it up with a float valve like beefier has. just make sure you buy an r/o filter that stays charged. i prefer the hydro logic ones. invest in a pre-filter too. it will eliminate the sediment and chlorine in the water. i use the big boy pre filter and evolution 1000 r/o filter but i use a lot more water than you. they make a small stealth 100 r/o filter and small boy sediment filter. you can get them both at most any hydro store online for about $250 total. rated for 100 gallons a day. there are cheaper ones but i've heard of people having problems with them.

Lol, accommodating parents! Knowing what I know, there's no way in hell I'd let my kids set up in my house bah. My hypocrisy knows no bounds...

Cheers the shower head idea may be an option. When I get my rigs working properly I may need up to 50 litres daily which I can't carry about, at least not without drawing attention.

cheers for the info bud. I don't have the kind of access you are talking about though. I wonder if I can buy a pump that will give the desired pressure without making too much noise. Also, this overflow to waste business puts me off. I am on a meter so really I don't want to be wasting water. Damn, why is nothing easy.

Yea I keep a real tight ship as far as the garden goes in their house. plus my mom has ms so I took the basement over as my home so I could take care of her better. It's works great! I pay them just like I was renting my own place and make the best of it. Plus my parents deserve my help, I put them through some rough times as a young lad lol.

Hope all you guys get your water going to your preference as well. Happy gardening!

your best bet would be to try and bring a water line over to your grow then. if you are looking to make a long term gig out of this then it really isn't that big a deal to bring a 3/4" water line from somewhere else right into your grow. i know you said that you have no shutoff valve but if the one at the meter isn't working right then the utility company has to fix that by law.

Just be careful cutting any metal water pipes in any house. In NZ - we earth these pipes and stray / floating voltage can be present at the pipe, cut it, it has no where to go bar through the person holding one end of the pipe. Always put a jumper lead between where you are going to cut. There are fewer and fewer reports each year of this happening.............but be mind full

Hey don't mean to hijack the thread, however I am looking into a cheap RO system myself. Was doodling around on eBay and found these caravan water filters. You connected them inline from your tape to where ever using standard garden hose fittings. They use activated charcoal as the filter medium and this store also has them in two stage kit filtering down to .5 micron - claiming to remove chlorine and other gunk. How would you think it compares to a basic RO filter (maybe just the main membrane as opposed to a full 3 stage kit). Cheers!

Only pierce the pipe most RO system come with the fitting.

Don't need any tools my 3 year old child could fit it

OK thanks everyone. Lots to think about!

I assume if you are perpetually topping up a reservoir you use some sort of ball float to ensure you don't over fill?

Also, is there anyway of reducing wastage? Do you plumb wastage into the waste pipe or washing machine or something?

Hmmm OK if money wasn't an issue what would you guys recommend. I want something that wastes very little water even if I have to replace filters regularly. I'm on a meter and I don't want to draw attention to my water usage.

I've tried loading up 5 litre bottles into my rucksac with rain water and 30 kilos/ litres EOD is a right pain in the ass. It's gonna have to be reverse osmosis

the best filters for growers in my opinion are the hydro logic ones. they have sizes for any type grow. ranging from $250 to $1500 all in. just depends on how much flow rate you want.

all r/o filter are going to have around a 3-1 waste ratio. it's just they way they are designed to expel the minerals in your water. no way around it.

Thanks for that info!

It looks like I'm gonna have to suffer tap water with an existing ec of 0.7 then. What about a tap attachment water filter. Just need to bring that EC down a bit. 0.4 is very workable but 0.7 is just too high!
