veging under hps wtf ?

So ,I'm sure this question has been asked before but at this point I have to ask it again. Do any of you veg and flower under hps? I don't mean to sound too blunt but I'm trying to weigh my options here so for the sake of keeping it straight across the board I don't care how much wattage you run, how many lamps you have or how long you have been growing. I just want to know who if any has had (great) not satisfactory results with hps only through the whole grow, start to finish. Ed Rosenthal seems to think that hps gives off more lumens than mh witch supposedly translates into better or similar growth during veg. The red spectrum that we all fear is far red witch equals stretch and again supposedly the hps does not throw out far red or if it does the amount is negligible. Any ideas my friends?

i use hps from sprout - harvest no problems. my plants are very bushy and that is without topping or lst.

Yup..
I use hps the whole grow and have nice tight spacing..no stretching from the spectrum..more prone to bleaching but might be the extra lumens..overall I haven't seen any disadvantages and I've veged and flowered using both mh and hps...I prefer hps

The bulb also lasts twice as long

Cfl to clone. As soon as they root I veg for six weeks under HPS. Then flower under HPS. I never get less that 8/9 oz a plant. :-)

You should be okay vegging flowering under hps. It will cause your plant to stretch compared to mh bulb or blue spectrum in general.

I've used both before.

I've actually just switched back to MH for veg as I want to limit stretch during 12/12 transition and plan to keep my MH in for at least 2 weeks during transition.

But for nearly 2 years I've been solely hps.

439g yield
427g yield
374g yield

From the same hps lamp over 3 grows using a 400w.

Dan those are killer results with a 400watter

if you read about plants. and light bulbs. you will understand you never judge a light bulb by its lums. the plant see the light differently . the color of the light plays a major role in the plants growth health. you need to read a few articles about this to understand . I have used mh and hps and t5 and t5mix with mh . results were as followed. cfl or t5 tight space bushy plants . mh along more of a stretch less bushy. hps stretch less bushy then mh. final mh and cfl mixed together excellent speedy growth less stretch then mh along great combo only way to go unless concerned about electric costs. this info is for veg only. the winner for a single bulb were t5. 6500k. then mh 7000k then hps 2000k. for speedy growth winner is mh. then t5 6500k then hps 2000k. worst growth slowest grown . this is a side by side comparison same strands every thing grown for a month . hope my experiment help you all out.

Very Cool experiment.
I love side by side comparisons like yours.
more Science than Pot head, ( I'm a pot head ), lol.

Thanks everyone for being so helpful. I think I will do a small control grow and try multiple lighting arrangements and see what I can see lol..
