Why isn't this man dead?

I was just reading news feeds and this one came along. I thought you were pretty much dead by .33 is this man made out of titanium.

Police say an Iowa City man was arrested after crashing his vehicle into a street sign while driving with a blood-alcohol content nearly six times the legal limit.
Iowa City police responded to the J Street residence of Levi B. Carter, 28, about 2 a.m. Friday after a witness reported that she had been a passenger in Carter’s vehicle when he drove off the road and hit a street sign, according to a police complaint.
The witness said Carter had been driving about 55 miles per hour on First Avenue before the crash, police say.
Upon arrival at Carter’s residence, officers located Carter in his house’s basement and was “talking to people that were not there,” according to the police complaint.
Police say Carter could barely stand without holding himself up and said he had two beers a few hours before police arrived and initially denied driving. Carter later admitted to driving the passenger home and was too intoxicated to complete a field sobriety test, according to police.
Police say Carter provided a weak breath into a preliminary breath test and the last reading was .467 percent before the PBT just read ‘HI,’ meaning it was too high to register.

Carter has been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor.

There is a guy in my dui class that had a bac of 0.51 and he didn't die. It's all about how tolerant you are to alcohol. Imo the guy needs counseling and rehab, not jail...

In-patient sure, but there's no way he should be back on the street. Lucky he didn't kill someone, I have no respect for people who drive when they're clearly too drunk.

I was hit by a drunk driver he totalled my hubby's car with his pickup truck (county sheriff's son). They had to cut the roof off the doors were jammed. The engine of the pickup was in his front seat.

I agree I just think they should help the people like this. I mean some people just need help realizing they have a problem. Throwing them in jail for a while and then letting them out isn't really solving the problem..I got two dui's in one month, went to counseling and realized that although I wasn't an alcoholic I did drink too much when I drank causing me to do stupid things. Having someone to talk to about it and help me realize I didn't really need to drink so much really opened my eyes..and I had two dui's at 0.3 BAC I was so drunk I didn't know I was driving because I blacked out. The counselor said I shouldn't have been able to even start the car.. Which is crazy, I know it was wrong but I didn't know I was that drunk. I weigh 150 lbs. So I was probably pretty drunk.

You're right, help them while preventing them from repeating the behavior. As for being blacked out, I'm a little biased there.. a friend/classmate of mine was killed on new years eve a few years back by a drunk driver. She was so hammered she didn't realize she hit someone, so she got off with no prison time. An 18 year old pedestrian with a family was run down and left to bleed out in the street, and his killer got off simply because she couldn't remember hitting him.

Well I'm not saying being blacked out should get ya out of it at all. But if nobody at least attempts to help someone with an obvious drinking problem like blacking out frequently etc. then it really does no good and something bad will happen if it hadn't already. I just don't think they should be thrown in jail. Jail doesn't help with drinking problems imo...

Because god protects drunkards and fools. He had double coverage.
Just because you're a drunk doesn't necessarily make you a fool. I've seen some pretty smart and bright alcoholics.. Actually really smart ones.. Everyone makes mistakes.

My oldest daughter who is now 40 was hit by a drunk driver when she was 16. She was head injured and has been in a wheel chair and can't walk or talk, and has the mentality of a fifth grader. I have NO sympathy for anyone who chooses to drink and drive. My kids best friend was killed in that accident, and mine was given a l ifetime of hell. Then someone says they didn't know they were drunk, or don't remember??? Do you remember you are very stupid??, and then think you need a break?? REALLY ??. Sorry, but this is my lifetime soapbox. I wil never drink or smoke and drive, and as I said. I have no sympathy or understanding for anyone stupid enough to do it. Just no excuses for me. peace and be kind.

I understand where you come from. I just think the problem can be solved before this type of thing happens is all.
