so i have been looking into this for a while but most of the threads on this are discussions of what is better, flat/matte white vs mylar.

no one has said if all paints are healthy for our plants. i am sure there are some that are harmful.

if this is true, what kind of paints are the best/better? water based, etc.

Voc's are the harmful gasss in paint. I'm not sure of there effects on plants but off gassing of voc's can continue a long time after paint is dry. A low voc water based paint would probably be your best bet.

From my experience, it won't make all that much difference. I originally lined my walls with mylar, eventually removed it and jut left the wall with the cream paint it already had on it, yields remained the same.

I'm fond of the flat white latex "Killz" brand.
It goes on super thick, usually you're done with 1 coat (mix it well !) and dries completely in 24 hours.
And no stink.

Note: Do not get the enamel (oil based) "Killz" as the smell of that stuff will drive you right out of your house !

Note also that Killz is top-of-the-line coating paint, so when you disassemble your room, if you have stains on the walls, one further coat will cover everything brand new again.

Worth the money for sure.

i use the cheapest latex (water base) primer or ceiling paint. killz is good stuff. interesting fact...the "oil" based killz is actually denatured alcohol based shellac made from a resin secreted from the lac beetle.

I did not know that.
I wonder how many beetles it takes to make a gallon of that stinky stuff.

Latex is a bitch to paint, it'll go on uneven if you don't have experience with painting. It's also prone to peeling off with humidity and heat. Painted bathroom ceiling with it..Terrible mistake

I learned something else today ! Thanks man.

I have only used the enamel Killz once (not in my house thank God) & it smelled so bad I had to close the shop down & send everyone home.

it's used in a lot of fire damaged homes, encapsulates well. latex will peel in high humidity but on plywood it's not really an issue unless multiple coats.
