Advice needed on sizing the right Carbon filter for room.

Hey RIU,

I have a Gorilla tent, 5x5. And have a 4 inch fan with a Can Carbon filter pulling air from the tent. My question is this tent seems much bigger in space compared to my older Secret Jardin 5x5 as the Gorilla is taller. Will my current filter setup keep smells in check, or should I pick up a larger 6in fan & filter.

Thanks for any quick advice, planning on picking up new stuff tomorrow as I'm day 10 in flower and don't want to run into issues, regardless if it's a legal set up.

Thanks!

Set it up with up and test for negative pressure.

My tent looks "sucked in" with my 4" inline exhaust.

my is a SJ 90 3x3x6

I have a passive return a 90 degree furnace pipe corner.

I stretch a women's stocking over the end to avoid any debris build up in my fan.
I highly suggest the last trick.

you might need to upgrade to a 6" if your 4" fan can't pull enough air.

in that case I would get an 8" and a speed controller!
an extra $50 bucks and you can Certainly Draw out your 5x5 tent.

I wish I could fit a larger tent!

There is definitely negative pressure and that's with the speed controller around 50%. I personally think the 4in is fine but I'm going to buy a new one since I used this one in 3 different grows. Just to be safe.

Anywhere between 75-80 depending on outside temps. The room the tent is toasty but with intake, especially with how cold it is, it's nice and steady.

When lights are off, btw 67-71.

5 x 5 ( by what height?)
You need to know the area cubed to work out what size fan/filter is suitable.

5 x 5 is just the surface area - OK for working out Lighting (watts per sq ft)
Air exchange requires CUBED AREA

WORK OUT METRES CUBED
X 1.25
X 60
AND you have the metres cubed per hour.

a 4" fan for a 5 x 5 tent seems very small
I use a 6" in my 4 x 4 x 6' tent.

Pretty sure it's 7 ' tall with either a 1' or 2' extension Kit.
so figure 5x5x7 foot.
175 cubic Feet interior with 7' height, It looks like a great tent.

It's 5'X5'x6'x11" . So you're right, I should just upgrade to 6in then. No biggie. I'm running a 1000 watt Mh/HPS if you were curious.

no clue

It does look like a great tent. My only problem with my SJ is that it could be taller..like that gorilla

I use a 1000w Lumatek dimmable in my 4 x 4 x 6 and it generates tons of heat.
I had to buy a ventilated hood.
When I got the 8 x 4 x 6 tent I bought a 12" fan, a 12"to 8" reducer and a $10 dimmer dial (very cheap fan speed controller).

I know that a 12" is overkill but it was incredibly cheap and I have 3 x 600w ballasts that are old/cheap/basic with basic reflectors.
My thinking was that, when the warmer weather comes, I will need something that can do a little bit more to keep the air moving.

I've just uploaded photo's of plants in the first week of flower (in the 4 x 4) and cuttings in the first week of propagation (8 x 4) - If you're interested to look?

I'd be interested to see your set-up-if you can be bothered to upload some pics....?

Hey NorthofEngland,

Pretty nice set up you got there! I don't think the 12in is too big and I'm venting/cooling my hood with a 6 in and it keeps my temps pretty stable. Now, in the summer, it's a different story. Two things I plan on adding is an A/C unit and a dehumidifier. My humidity was an issue this past summer but because I was in the tail of of my grow, I never bothered buying one as we were approaching fall.

I will be more than happy to upload some pics. I have 3 HUGE females in the tent now all supercropped so I have a nice even canopy. I do need to remove the fan I have in there now as it takes up too much space. I'm currently mobile but I will upload some photos a little later today.

Hi JG
(Nice moniker, btw. I am also a Five Families follower - over 300 books about OC in my collection).

3 HUGE FEMALES
Do you know their strains?

A/C
In the UK A/C is seldom used.
We have a short. mild 'warm' season
(it's usually not very warm).

During the 12 hours of lights off if I turn down the fan speed - the RH goes up.
Turn up the fan speed - Temps drop too low!
So I monitor levels and try to find a compromise
I need one of those FAN SPEED CONTROLLERS with Thermostat and Humidistat.
Maybe in two crops....?

Saturday I am moving the 9 flowering plants into the 8 x 4 tent
(that's the WILMA BIG 9)
and putting my WILMA 20 in the 4 x 4 tent
but, probably, the propagator will stay under light for another few days...

My cuttings were taken 8 days ago and, although I cannot see roots, they look healthy
LIKE MINIATURE PALM TREE'S!

I uploaded pics of them taken at 5 days
i'll add more at 10 days and when they're in the 6.5litre pots of Clay Pebbles.
I'm going to document ALL this grow (from cuttings to harvest)
that way anyone can offer advise, constructive criticism or unrestrained praise....

12" FAN
8 X 4 X 6' (2.4 X 1.2 X 2.0m)
2.4 x 1.2 x 2.0 = 5.76 metres cubed
5.76 x 1.25 (this equates in a 25% flexibility (or an allowance for error)
= 7.2 (this is the amount of air that the fan must exchange EVERY MINUTE.
7.2 x 60 = 432 m3/h (metres cubed per hour).

*8"RvK A1 750m3/h
8"RvK L1 950m3/h
*12.5"RvK A1 1300m3/h
12.5"RvK L1 1800m3/h

*I have these fans
(L1 is LONG)

I also have my 6"RUCK which is the only one bought new.

So I need a fan that can handle 432m3/h and I have one that can do up to 750m3/h and one that can do 1300m3/h.
But dispersing heat takes more capacity
AND I will use a cheap dimmer switch as a fan speed controller....
It's ALWAYS better to have more suction than you need, than to need more suction than you have.

I've followed the five families for a long time. Wow! That's a collection! I don't come close to the collection of OC books I have.

Yes - Pineapple Express, C99 and LA Chocolat

I wish I had that problem, but the EC of the US get's hot and humid during the summer months. It was a battle last summer but I know what I need for when this summer comes. With the speed controllers, the same thing happens to me! But only with the exhaust/carbon filter. If I want the humidity to go up, I lower the speed. Right now my lights are off and the RH is at 25%, but when the lights turn on, it will increase to around 40%. Honestly, the only issue I have with the low RH is the plants will drink way more water, causing me to have to top off every 2 days in 5 Gallon buckets.

I went ahead and ordered 6in fan w/ Phresh Filter 6in Carbon filter. Should be sufficient in scrubbing the air in the ten.

I owe you some pictures! I will take some tonight and post them on here. I'll PM you when I do so.

Why dont you leave 1 filter/fan setup were itnjust circulates air in the tent and 1the new one your buying for exhaust every few minutes it will help smells tremendously
