Here's Some Examples of What Topping and Fiming does

Hey everyone...I just had the thought that some people may like to see what happens to plants that have been pruned using different methods.... I wanted to know when I first started. So enjoy...I hope

First off here is my outdoor patch

This pic is of a Sweet Nightmare that has had no pruning

This is another Sweet Nightmare that was TOP'd and then had some heavy pruning(basically topping on more than just the top shoot)The pic right after is a NL that had the same treatment.(One thing to note is that these 2 were the last to be transplanted from my ebb n flow into soil)

This is NL #5 that has been TOP'd

And these 2 are NL that were FIM'd

Lastly...this is what the stalk of a TOP'd plant looks like right at the point it was pruned earlier in its life.

Looks like the ones that were fim'd have more branches and bud sites. Is that what you see?

How many nodes when you started topping and fimming?

Yeah the FIM'd ones look pretty awesome. Its hard to say which method has given the most yield enhancement. One of the TOP'd NL has the most branching...well its the biggest at least. I guess I'd say that the FIM'd ones are comparable to the 2 that were TOP'd and then pruned. I can't remember how many nodes I had...I know it was around 8 or so.

I personally find that fimmed smaller plants need bud supports as the branches are weak, whereas topped plants are sturdier as there are less branches. Pretty logical really.

All of mine are plenty thick to support the buds...it isn't a problem if they have plenty of time to grow after they're cut...but I def. see what you are saying...especially the fact that FIming makes them more top-heavy. Oh..I just re-read your post...yeah a small plant thats Fim'd would....I see what you're saying now

Here you go...see there is no real cut like the TOP'd one...it just has more main stems

So you topped them, then pruned some of the branches later? I'm confused about what pruning is. Does that mean you topped some of the branches, or fimmed some of the branches that after you topped? I thought pruning was just cutting away some of the undergrowth or congested parts of the plant to clean them up but the way I'm reading you pruning helped produce more growth on the ones you topped. So I'm just trying to understand that.

By the way, from what I remember about fimming and topping, topping is easy to tell if you did it right. When you fim, you just have to wait and see to make sure you got close enough without having actually topped it... is that about right? I need to find the thread from last year that demonstrated the two techniques.

I topped them once...then they grew for a bit...then I topped other branches besides the main 2 stems that were a result of the original topping...so now theres like 8 or so main stems. I just consider pruning as cutting anything off, didn't mean to confuse

I didn't plan to at all. I'm doing an ebb n flow...but every one of my seeds ended up be female...I couldn't pull myself to trash em.

Got it! Thanks. Helps a lot. Still figuring out the fim stuff. Gonna play a bunch with a bunch of clones. Amongst other mad scientist experiments.

I do have one other thing to add..when I FIM plants it seems like they take longer to recover than the top'd ones....and its almost like it just slows the main stem to a point where the other stems "even ip" with the main one...then they all grow at the same rate.

How long it takes doesn't bother me in the least.

Once a plant has the alternate nodes, can ya still top? Or is that more a FIM?

I don't see why not...as long as there is time to grow back before flowering. I don't know which one would be better to do.

They all look a bit leggy and could sure use some propper staking so more light can get into the center of the plant. If a plant has been fimmed(fuck I missed) is what it stands for, you can't tell where it was done if done corectly. You will only see the results after comparing two of the same plants side by side, and top one and fim the other.That's how to tell weather or nor the fim did some good.
