The Car Talk Thread

I know we got a few bike riders here so thought I'd ask your opinions..
Guy I used to.work with posted this thing today on Fb about how car drivers should be more responsible while driving , maintain lane, signal, blah blah blah..
As if trying to imply that the only reason motorcycles are dangerous is because of crappy automobile drivers.. I, taking pride in my driving had to point out the fact that while yes, some car drivers are a danger to themselves never mind bikes, even without cars on the road, mototocycles are inheritly dangerous as there's not much in the way of protection in the case of an accident .. Idk how many people I know who've put a bike down and have gotten seriously hurt ..
Then of.course you have the idiots who think they're too cool for a skid lid.. talk about retarded to the 10th°……

So what do you bikers think? Is riding a bike dangerous regardless of other people on the road or would a biker never get killed if it weren't for all of us crazy ass car drivers out there ?
I got my opinion obviously , but the thing is some other biker chimed in and also tried acting like all motorcycle accidents were caused by motorists, which I obckously is think is bullshit, and tend to think that the simple act of getting on one is taking your life in your own hands at times, which is why I don't own a bike..

Cannabineer, I know you ride, what are your thoughts ?? Anyone else ??

Hey RB

My thoughts, from having worked both sides ...
Bikes are inherently dangerous. To my good fortune, every one of my bike mishaps did not involve a car being either careless or aggressive.
But being on a bike, and being in a car minding the bikes, gave me a perspective. Bikes and bikers are simply less conspicuous because of their size, especially when crouched over those surprisingly small sportbikes that suddenly change location like UFOs.

Bikers can do a few things to improve their odds. Loud pipes really do help. So do bright vests/jackets. Most of all, defensive riding that emphasizes avoiding radical maneuvers and being unpredictable.
I gain appreciation for the fact that car operators have a real duty/need to be aware of the bikers too, and it would be great if driver's ed would spend some time on how the envelope for cars and bikes is different, particularly in the hands of a squid like me, neither brave nor skilled! I have become much more solicitous of a biker's need for space, and I simply don't engage in maneuvers that'll crowd a rider. in CA splitting lanes is legal for bikers, and I make a point of making/leaving space for lane splitters, even the dildoheads who think they can shoehorn a gold Wing between my honda and the H2 next to me! There but for the grace of Motorcycle God (Om Banna? Wayne Rainey?) go I.

I've riden in every state exept Maine and Hawaii. Alaska is THEE WORST place for a bike.People do not know anything about decent driving. You put your life in some asshole's hands. Its scarey as fuck. Its so bad that once in awhile I wear a helmet:wall:

Bikes are definitely more inherently dangerous than cars but they are at a much higher risk from stupid drivers because of it. How often do you hear of a minor motorcycle accident?
As a driver I try always pay attention to riders because I'm aware that they will probably be crippled or killed by an accident. I don't want to feel responsible for that at all.

Bikes are riskier. I ride in the SF Bay area and being run off the road is just par for the course.
I had to learn to curb my anger and toss the plans for handlebar mounted rocket launcher.
I would ride my bike to check on customers in LA and feel more comfortable there, they seemed to be more more on the ball.

another thing about bikes people dont get is that in a car tires are flat so at all times you have at least a 1.5 inch wide and about 5 inch long contact with the road per tire go for it freak out slam the brakes thers a slight chance of you flipping if you in a top heavy vehicle other than that your ok on a bike tires are rounded so you have a 1x1 inch contact with the road not very good if you break on sand water oil or even the white lines your skidding if you brake with the front tire while your turning your falling if your back tire skidds cus some dick cut you off and you had to brake you better ride that bitch cus if you freak out and let go of the brake itll catch traction and buck u off

Going to a dealer for the first time in many years. What's negotiation like these days? Bought my last new car of the manufacturers website pre-release. Enjoyed the flat price. Are most dealers this way nowadays?

No. Be an absolute bastard when negotiating. Be willing to lose a coupla times. Soft-ass sales managers won't know what hit'm.

So long as you're not after a model or package that is being kept in undersupply.

When you mean lose, you don't mean burning a dealer do you (by this I mean brinksmanship)? You just mean come back again, right? Augh. Hate that shit but I can temporarily summon it if needed. Are we talking several thousands? Car in question is around 30k but we are pretty open to several different brands. That's prolly going to end up being my tack - play them ag'in eachother.

Oh no. I mean drive the negotiation into insoluble impasse. If you're not willing to do that, the salespredator will smell it on you. And it's good practice ... dissing the deal offered while still maintaining the fiction that the salesperson is a fine human who is there to help. It can be real fun too! Typically a hard bargain can save 15 to 25% off nominal list.

Since you're not wedded to a particular model, there are ways (I am not current) to shop for deep discounts due to oversupply. I have found the newspaper ads (esp. on Friday and Saturday, the typical Motor Section days) to provide intel; see where the rebates and super deals are. That won't work for Porsches but will usually work great for pickup trucks and midsize sedans.
