I have a well and the water comes out at around 320 ppm because of the calcium, so it goes through a softener and then an ro.
I mix a batch per the schedule from the website, it does go to 5.8/5.9 and 1800 ppm and will float up to 6.6/6.7 within a couple of days.
It takes quite a leap of faith to NOT adjust when the numbers are like that
You definitely need to keep adjusting. Hydro plants react very quickly to their environment and you'll get bad things above 6.1.
When the pH goes UP, do the ppms also go down by chance?
That's how it usually works.
Nutrients usually lower pH of water, so as the actual nutrients are "drunken" by the plant(s) in excess of the actual h2o (causing the ppms to drop) the pH goes UP.
At that point, when you top off or on the next res change, you can increase the ppms compared to the same amount of water. IE: if you use 10ml/gal of nutes, you would use 12 or 15ml/gal on the top off or res change.
pH going up + ppms going down = plant is drinking nutrients and can usually handle increased ppms
pH staying level + ppms staying level = plant has reached the point it wants
pH dropping + ppms going up = overnuted, possibly causing burns and lockouts, keep three eyes on pH and adjust. I've seen pH being too high for too long start causing this. Also, bacteria in the res and/or root rot can lower pH.
"it does go to 5.8/5.9 and 1800 ppm "
Hmm...I didn't see you mention what ppm it starts out at...If they're both raising, I would adjust the pH back down to 5.8 more often. It sounds like you're getting a buildup of the nutrients which are not being taken up by the plant(s) from the pH being off (which would increase ppms)...
