It arrived today.
A simple piece of equipment
(but the first fire that mankind learned to control wasn't exactly complicated!).
A metal spigot reducer 315mm-200mm
ideal for connecting an RvK315E1A1 to 200mm ducting and carbon filter.

A $10 dimmer switch is ordered and will be used as a simple fan speed controller.

My 2.4 x 1.2 x 2.0m tent needs a fan that can exchange 432m3/h
the RvK315E1A1 has a capacity of 1300m3/h
A speed controller is essential.

It's a pity that we have no link to pictures of the very first wheel.
Some things are so simple that their inherent genius is overlooked.
Maybe in a generation, or two, the use of a reducer will be recognised as a giant leap towards post modernity...?

I would watch out using a simple dimmer switch as they are rotary style dimmers and generally have a max wattage allowance.


Also you may get a serious amount of Humming from your fan as standard dimmers cut the current on and off to maintain the set dimming.

You have to be really careful dimming a fan once you exceed 200mm.

Most fan manufacturers make speed controllers for their fans.

SYSTEMAIR make one and I'm sure they say can be used with every fan up to 250mm or something like that so just be carefull

12 inch fans are loud i would box it up
if you box up you will not hear the hum either
also it will vibrate when you use a dimmer to control it
hang it from cords or something or it will rattle your room lol
check the power rating too, but it should be fine
i have a standard dimmer switch controller but i do not use it since boxing the fan my fan is 250w

Are there any tutorials or 'sticky's' about BOXING UP FANS?

The dimmer has a maximum of 300 watts

Eventually I want a more advanced fan speed controller.

But cash isn't available at the moment.

Look for the specs of the 315mm fan and find out its wattage used.

Then match the controller.

The one you linked is a Variac controller instead of rotary.

I don't doubt that the VARIAC is better
but my dimmer switch was £6.79
It will be some time until I can splash out on a variac.

I already use one on my 6"RUCK
(the fan that was my first and which you helped me select).

It's been great but
If I turn down the fan speed too much the RH can exceed 90%
I leave the fan speed too high and temps can drop below 60.
I made a point of having lights out for the warmest part of the day (8.30am - 8.30pm)
but it's still not very warm.

This is probably the coldest month.
Over the spring/summer months I hope to prepare things better for the return of the cold.
Tubular heaters, and the type of fan speed controller that allows data input MINIMUM and MAXIMUM required temperatures
as well as MINIMUM FAN SPEED (so odour and air exchange tasks are still effective).
Probes take readings, thermostatic and humidistatic sensors, self regulating and self adjusting, software based technology
ensures that the grow room retains optimal environmental levels.

not sure what some of that mean....?

In the centre of the propeller it says, amongst other things -
"0,55 - 0,77A 125/175W....

I believe that, as I found out earlier, 1 Amp = 230w (approx.)
0.55 x 230 = 126.5
0.77 x 230 = 177.1
(125.175w...?).

you can buy fans with inbuilt speed controllers
you can also buy wooden boxed fans that will put out 1000m3 with a single 6 inch outlet or combinations of inlets and outlets

with these boxed fans you can have 2 small 6 inch outlets if you do not want to make large holes in walls etc and one large 12 inch inlet connected to the filter
there is more choice

12 inch ducting is also big and a bit clumsy i would not use over 10 inch
i started off using the plastic blade inline fans rvk systemair etc they are cheap and do the job well enough
but they do not move much air compared to the boxed fans which use squirrel cage type fans with metal blades
the motors on these are heavy duty took mine apart to clean it
if you give the blades a little spin with your hands the thing keeps on spinning on and on like its a flywheel or something



these types use torin sifan motors 8 inch can do something like 1500m3

if you don't mind spending a bit of money on a nice fan i would recommend one of these box types
they are better than the metal boxed types which are still noisy i have an air force metal boxed fan and i put this inside another box lol
anything rated over 40dbwill be noisy enough to annoy you in the same room with it
over 60db and neighbors may hear it
