Running my first Hempy--Hashberry

So I have decided to switch over from soil to hydro and am using a hempy as a stepping stone between the process.

I did two rounds of germination one 18 days ago and the other 10 days ago and have transplanted them into solo cups done up hempy style. Coming from soil, I am not use to having to start providing nutes so early into growth and think that I may not be giving them everything they need.

Any advice on feeding?

Here is what everyone is looking like so far.

Feeding so far:

12/13/2013--mixed 8-10drops of Rapid Start, 1mL Iguana Grow in 2/3 gallon of water--everyone got a full cup. Foliar sprayed with the same solution.
12/16/2013--mixed 5-8 drops of Superthrive, 5.5mL Iguna Grow, 2mL voodoo Juice, and 10 drops of Rapid Start in 1 gallon of water. pH of solution was 6.3 (little high I think?)--each plant got a full cup
12/17/2013--in 2/3 gallon--1.5mL Cal-Magic, 3 drops Floralisious Plus, 1mL Florablend--each plant got a half cup of this. pH was 5.7 in this solution.

Been an interesting time getting use to these hempy buckets and seeing how the plants responded. I read some bad advice on this site, dont remember where, but it said to drop my pH to 5.3 when watering.......WRONG!!!

So I have sense corrected that error and transplanted them into 1 gallon pails. Still figuring out exactly what the girls want while their growing in the bucket, but hopefully I will have that dialed in by the time i decide to flip the lights.

This was on the 4th. When I started noticing the problem.

...I lost a week of growth because of the damn pH. Lesson learnt, K.I.S.S. After transplanting and adjusting pH and nutrient schedule things seem to going in the right direction.

Nice. Going goodish lol. In veg I swing pH from 5.8 to 6.1 then in bloom I go from 6-6.3...and remember to adjust pH After adding ur nutes

lol, yeah after fixing my pH problem things seem to be going much better. I'm adjusting the pH after adding nutes to 5.7-6.

Smoke, just curious as to why you increase the pH during bloom? Is it for increased P uptake?

follow the mfg recommendations for concentrations on the bottle.
for my setup i keep the water between 65 and 75 deg F
PH within 0.1 of 6.0 at all times.
and set the timer at 2 ticks, 3 times a day.
they are very happy with this.

i can tell you that 3 ticks, 4 times a day is too much

Welcome to hydro! I did a few Hempy buckets when I was getting into hydro too. I can't recall, is that straight perlite? Hempy suggested perlite and vermiculite mix but people have modified things to their own needs. I even did a hydroton Hempy successfully.

Hey, on your bottom picture, second plant from the left. Looks suspiciously like Mg deficiency to me. You might want to address that. I always added 1/4 tsp Epsom salts per gallon as preventative...using Maxi-bloom.

Vermiculite mixed in can cause more probs in hempy too IMHO. Stick with medium grade perlite ONLY and your gold.

Little trick as well. Use cheap white vinegar for ph down when adjusting ph with plain water or nutes. It will save you a lot of money in the long run.

Next time plant seedling sprouted in rockwool in a half empty cup. So when they stretch you can cover remaining of stem in cup with perlite. All that stem will be covered and become sexy white roots.

JD, I'm running 100% perlite. I heard that the vermiculite just caused problems and left a sludge at the bottom of the bucket, so went the 100% perlite route instead.

As for Mag, right now I'm adding in 3mL of Cali-Magic and 6mL botanicare sweet berry per gallon at every feeding for Mag. Not sure if that hits what I need or not. I will post new pics soon.

And right now I'm running pH between 5.9 and 6.1. So exactly what everyone seems to be saying now. lol

Much better results than that rough week I had.

I hadn't heard that about the vermiculite...but I've been away from growing for a few years. The Cali-magic certainly should do it. Is that plant I pointed out to you doing any better? Maybe it's a Mg hungry strain.

Sorry, I know the pictures aren't great, but I don't have a lot of room to get good angles. Will probably take each plant out and photograph separately next week.

They are overcrowded and stretching as a result, I will be adding in some side lighting this week hopefully. The growth from the hempy is ridiculous compared to soil. Was not expecting them to bush out this much--but I'm NOT complaining

All the stalks look similar in color so I just took one close up:


These Hashberry are all from seed and its looking like 8/8 are female (from non-feminized seeds). Kind of bummed about this cause I was hoping to replenish my seed stock but o well.

I read it somewhere and then read that it works just as well with 100%perlite, just requires more frequent watering than the traditional 3:1 (perlite:vermiculite) so I decided to run perlite only to help eliminate an extra bag of stuff because I'm growing in a rather small area.
