Damn Scammers...what should I do?

It seems like the only info you gave is all freely available online already so you're fine. Seems like an odd scam though.

"Hey, how you doing? I'd like to talk to you about helping out with our local charity. Can I get your name? Very good? Date of Birth and phone number? Ok, excellent. Now can I have access to all of your banking and credit card numbers? Oh really, fantastic! Thank you so much you're really going to help change some lives"

Would anyone be dumb enough to actually buy this?

I would have called the police and started following them as soon as they asked for bank account information. Just followed them to every neighbor they went up to. And taken pictures of them. If they were legit they would have no problem with it and would welcome the police who would make you stop following them. I think they would bug out if they were scammers though
Exactly, minus the cops and do with them as I please!

The only real thing you can do is keep an eye on your credit report and banking statements. If their going to commit fraud under your name it will appear in one of those sources. If it was me, I would have just told them to fuck off in the beginning.

If I was you and gave them that info, right after they asked for a bank account you should have demanded the paper they wrote your info on.

ok serious answer this time....no worries bro. call any CREDIT REPORTING AGENCY...they are Experian, Equifax and trans Union. tell them you want a FRAUD ALERT on your file. once its on the one CRA it goes on the others automatically. Problem Solved. Please give my rep to FINSHAGGY. he needs it desperately.

Thread jack.

You make the call, scammers or just stoners?

My OS broke. I have taken this computer in to a local shop. Despite the fact that it in no way acted like it, they tell me that the drive is fried. $400 to try to gt the data off of it. $500 if they have to "open it in a clean room". They claim th drive is making noise, etc.. Frankly, I didn't believe them but thought them merely not very competent. I told em to put in a new drive, build the OS and give me the old drive. Figured I would do it myself. I just called them (two days later), now they claim that the data was fine. They are moving it to the new drive for $80. Now I figure they are full of shit. None of this makes any sense. Why, if there really was nothing wrong with the drive, did you just install a new one?

How do I react? There is no incriminating data that they have access to.

It used to be called flagging your credit report. Essentially you get an alert anytime someone accesses your CR. Not a bad idea really. That would help in that venue. It would also give you plausible deniability if they got the rest of your ID and did something nasty with it, as it would show you reported it and yes you should file a police report. Again registering the crime so it can't come back on you.

Good luck.

Sorry to jack your thread, but I don't see that you have a problem. You just gave them info that is already available or outright false.

They're gonna move on to the next person. You foiled their evil plan.

I would mention it to the fuzz.

That is one thing I cant stand in this business. They are telling you that because that is one of the most expensive things to charge and most people are unaware what they are doing. I would have to know more about what your system was doing to tell you how to fix it.

Oh, I knew what was wrong with it. I installed two Microsoft important upgrades and it screwed the OS. Booted fine in safe mode. Just core dumped on most normal boots. I musta came off tech-stupid. They're gaming me.

Should have just booted into safe mode then reverted back before the update.

So, why didn't you ask someone in here before going and getting ripped off? You know how many techs are around here right?

p.s. all drives make noise while they're looking for data or writing it.

they need a lot more info to jack your identity, dont worry bout it!
Bank would throw up a red flag with only a middle name and an old phone number.

You should have laid down the law!!!! I would have gone with a stunner and a power bomb!
I know, I think I would have opted for sweet chin music though.

IMO it's old people who are the real targets, they think they are doing something for a good cause and feel guilted into handing over the financial info..

.00X% will, that's the only reason they do it, otherwise what's in it for them?
probably a higher figure than we would think.

Yes, I should have wish I had of thought of doing it at the time

honestly I think you'll be fine. you would've been fucked had you given them your bank info.
Yeh think your right.

I can't even get credit for myself ,so good luck to them.. I can't see them getting far without my first name though.. I will look into that anyway.. and no, i cannot rep finshaggy, he is too lame.

Looks like they chanced their luck to see if you were willing to pay them a thousand bucks for nothing.. I would tell them to give you your system back as was or you will take them to court..

To save us all time. This is trivial crap. Why waste good talent when I will need it for my Linux build? Yeah, I know a bit about drives. My first personal modem was 1200 baud. When it broke, I went to the back door of US Robotics with a joint nd walked out with a brand new, just released, 2400. I was the man. There was nothing wrong with this drive. Can you blame a guy for trying? Yes. Yes, I can.

Maybe its more of me not working atm and need something to do I guess. idk.. I'm happy to help anyone with their system if asked. I only charge when I have to put my hands on it. And 2 days to fix a "hard drive" seriously? I can fix MBR in 20 min.

I don't think I came off as a smartass, but if I did, sorry. I don't ever mean too.
