What I was thinking based on your original questions, more power is never a bad thing and closer to comping your existing 2x400's. I'm going with 2x190's for flowering my next round to see what all the hype is about...

2 xgs all the way. Still cuts your power by over 50%...add in cooling and looking like 65+% energy savings. with a light that will perform damm near like a 1000w inside a 2x2...times 2lights=2x4...sounds like a no brainer to me.
Led are an amazing...but they are not magic and you still need to have enough wattage to produce the light necessary for growth. At todays tech point from what I have seen is that is about 60% of the hps wattage for bigger hps...and as low as 40%-50% for smaller confined setups. You are right in-between all of that and should be good if you choose a top unit like a51. Even watt for watt I personally think the xgs have more potential than the hans.
You said you're getting about 1g/w with hps...well that is over 2g/w with 2 A51's. Just for reference, no one has hit even 1.5g/w more than once that I know of. So not to say it can't happen but not a lot of evidence showing it will(specially easily). My point is that you are borderline too low on wattage with your led ideas, just have real expectations.
And if you are adding in all the electricity in the room/system then it's even harder/more impressive to hit the g/w.

So in all honesty I would need 3 A51 190's to hit an elbow. They would pay themselves off in one cycle. Just thinking out loud here. I am down with investing in the future and when has the initial amount in mind ever been less then the reality. Never if you ask me. I threw $1k out there to my significant other and she winced, but LED was her idea to begin with. It's not like we don't have it or it would affect our lifestyle or anything, it's just more then I was planning on. Wrapping my mind around it and I should present a good argument to my woman.

1 unit from 2 a51 is doable, but that's not 2g/w(1g/w with your two 400hps). The new a51's have a better chance than the older, but no one has ran a cycle yet they are still too new.
I don't know if you looked up dawg...he has a few a51's and pulls nicely. If Dawg would get some good clone genetics he would hit a unit with 2 SGS's. He grows from bean and bad pheno's keep him back. He get's over 8oz with one and th other got like 5oz...but had they both been clones of the good one he would have had it no question. And that was in a 2x4 tent. So I know it can be done.
It will pay back pretty quick and if you count your harvest towards that, super quick. Girls are smart, and they see things more long run sometimes. Long ruins the name of the game with led's and savings.
2 XGS's will do you great to start. And may be plenty when all is said and done. I was just telling you what the past/present has shown.

I agree with GroErr, two XGS-190's should be able replace your current 600W HPS set-up.
If you wanted to go for a bigger harvest, you can always add more lights, like Beef said.

That's a great sounding plan, sir.
Four XGS's in a 4x4 would yield some excellent results!
I still have a T5 fixture in my mother/clone tent, but my two flowering tents are all LED.

My thoughts are LED replacements for 2 x 8 bulb T5HO's - mainly to get the heat even further eliminated and all the other benefits that come with...
I'd be covering 2x4 or 3x4 in a 4x4 tent and was hoping to at least replace that with a wattage equivalent LED steup - considering vertical as well... so DIY or something more strip-based has some appeal... but if I purchase I'm thinking 2 of the a51's up front and guessing I may or may not need a 3rd... so similar shoes to many of the other posts...

What do you folks think? Would 2 of those new '14 a51's produce less heat overall and be adequate replacement (wattage wise) for replacing my 2 fixtures?

2 of a51's will produce alot less heat than 2 8 bulb t5's. My 3 induction/led combos together run less heat than 2 t5's. My induction/led combo puts off a little more heat than a51. I can only compare to 1 a51 panel. thats all I have.
