Fan Leaf Stem Slight Purple/Red? Here's Why

So you have Noticed some of The Top of your Stems to your fan leaves have Got a purple/red spotted tinge to them? Some of them possibly top half purple/red & bottom half green stem?

I have had this & still sometimes get it, Thinking its a nutrient deficiency you start from the beginning checking ph & ppm & soil etc, Bumping up the N-P-K Although you were sure your soil was perfect.

Well iv come to a conclusion & a good answer proven from personal experience, Is your Soil Air-Rated enough? Aka Perlite & Vermiculite?

When the roots have a hard time breathing, The stems tend to let you know via showing signs of Suffocation (Purple/Red Stems)

Adding up to 40% Perlite if needed can be necessary, you do not want compact soil, Let your roots breathe & i guarantee your colouring of stems will never show again!

Dont Believe in that "Low Temp" Bullshit, this only works if the temp is Fridge/Freezer cold or lower, Or sudden temp drop example: Putting plant from 30°c straight into freezer for hours.

Some strains WILL turn Purple or Red on leaf stems or even entire plant stems but this takes effect on the whole stem colour not just the top half

I have been wondering bout purple stems for awhile now. And you may got something there, most people I've seen answer say, temp (environment)/nutes/lockout/strain , but none of those really apply to my garden or gardens I've seen. Yet I still see purple stems. Anyone chime in with a botanical explanation of what I'm now sure is a natural plant function?

I dont like to contradict people but
cold temps for an extended period absolutly turn plants purple.
I grow the same strains indoors and outdoors and inside no purple to brag
about.

According to science Below 50
locks out p.
Deficiencies cause purpling.

when I transplant it takes a while for
the plant to uptake nutrients and I get purpling.
My soil is aerated plenty fine.

Just saying its not bullshit

Addition of extra K will bring out some purple,,,,somewhat strain dependent. But it does boost the effect to run 55 deg at night. There are products sold at your local grow store that are 0-0-3 and are "sold" to enhance "purple".

I think a common one is now called
purple snowstorm.

I can absolutely corroborate the low temps theory as far as my experience has been. I grow in the basement of an old house in a northern climate. The winter can see temps drop below 60. Virtually every strain I have going in the winter have dark purple or red stems. When they flower they are nice and warm and the heat tapers off slowly after lights out, so any exposure to cold temps is minimized. I have a heater running in there at night now and am seeing new leaves grow that don't have purple or red stems.

So, in my experience, the temps seem to be the cause of the colorations I see. Don't really get any purple bud out of it unless the strain is genetically predisposed, and even then it is more like, "I think I see some purple" ha ha.

Also freezer temps? Really dude. Temps at night below 60 can be enough in some cases.

You came to this conclusion without knowing what that particular part of the plants anatomy name is? Hate to break this to you but PETIOLES can purple from many, many different factors. Your guarantee is bogus at best and your conclusions lack any substance at all. Nice try though...entertaining!

Lower temps question, based on what is said in here and what I have researched in the past.. would it be safe to say that when it is cool, and the red petioles and stems come out to play is bc the plant takes up less water and nutrients bc it is cooler outside, when warm it takes up much more water and nutrients. So when its cold, plants like heavier feedings and lighter feedings in warm weather... depending on the strain.

So, I grow out door not in pots from seed I collected from various sources, 4 plants, 1 started out with red/purple main stem eventually turned green by all leaf stems are red/purple, solid not spotted or faded. Could this just be the strain? She's definitely a sativa, but I know not the strain. Any ideas?

Stems turn purple for one reason! Plant is not getting adequate amounts of phosphorus! That's the only reason petioles will turn purple! Some strains are purple strains, but that is maybe 5% of strains out there that have that trait. Either because temps are too low, which will cause phosphorus to lockout, or your magnesium levels are too low and it can't help carry the phosphorus throughout the plant, its why adding magnesium can, at times, fix the issue, so people suddenly think it's magnesium that causes it. As for adding cal-mag, no, it's just magnesium, not calcium that can help. Another mentioned raising npk? No, just the p should be raised in most cases. If you have your main stem with purpling streaks on it, that can be some sulfur lacking. This is quite a well noted issue, it just takes a bit of reading and research to know he real answer and not throw guesses out there!

The guy at the "grow shop" sold me Flora Nova, all plants look happy, one seems to be purple strain one seems to be indica dominant and two appear to be non budding variety, I don't believe they are male, I've had males before and they were covered in little white flowers. These seemingly non budding variety have white hair that is turning brown and no signs of seeding or budding. Thanks for your answer...
