Well anyone with a brain would argue that any performance related car will cost a decent amount more. What your failing to realize is that Hondas can be built fast for very little cash flow. Do you auto x, drag race or road race? Even if I buy a used sti or evo or corvette the amount I pay to modify that car to a respectable power number is around 7-10 grand and that's if I do the labor myself. FFs I could build a Honda for 10 grand including the price of the car and still have a car to compete with my used "performance car" that I'm already 30k into including the price of the car. I've built them all man and Hondas are the some of the best bang for the buck. I have a feeling you hate the honda fan boys that think their ricer is fast and most of the time you're pry spot on but give credit where credit is due.

alright lets say you got 10 grand to blow total. you think your going to get more performance by buying a honda and modding it or buying a 240, a mk3 supra, a 300zx, 5.0 mustang, any old car with a 350 in it, eclipse, etc. and modding it? there are many performance related cars out there that take mods better then a honda any day that you can get for about the same price.

btw i already gave them their credit, just pointing out there are a handful of better ways to go.

To build a 5.0 you need to spend 5-7 grand for a good base, unless you want it to look like a shit box. all of the cars i posted can be bought for 3 grand or less and can be made pretty damn fast with the left over money. all faster then a honda with the same amount of money. im not talking twin turbo 300s im talking stock NA on all of those cars. ive got 24 hour access to a dyno any time i want for free so it dont cost me shit and no i dont tune cars, never even tried. but i can also get that done free at my buddies dyno shop lol. as for your saturn comment its funny you bring that up lol....i no longer own a saturn but about 4 years ago i built a 96 saturn sl2 SPECIFICALLY for destroying hondas

never ran it at the track but could barely beat my buddies 4th gen trans am that ran low 12s

What it really boils down to is what kind of racing you plan to build with your budget race car (autoX, road course, drag, ect.).

For Autocross i'd go with a 88-91 Honda Civic EF. They are extremely light weight, 1800-2100 lbs depending on year/trim level and can easily be stripped down to the 1600 pound range. They've got 4 wheel independent double wishbone suspension, you can get some decent entry level coilovers, chassis braces and urethane bushings for everything for under a grand total. For the engine, a pieced together turbo kit for the stock D-Series or a B18 swap and a couple bolt ons will get you all the power you'll need.

For drag racing, a fox body Mustang. This one is a no-brainer, RWD with a solid rear axle, big displacement engine and easy to make big power. Do i really need to go into the modification details...?

For road course racing, the 240, Z32 and Supra are all a great platform to start with. They all have great balance, RWD, independent suspension all around and have factory turbo motors that can be swapped in with plenty of meat on the bone with a couple bolt ons and tuning.

pretty sure you hate yourself for trying to make an sl2 fast. The fact that you never took it to the track but built it to beat Hondas tells me you never dynod it nor tuned it. Go home kid, if you purposely picked a Saturn to build and weren't gifted that car you're as dumb as I thought. Isn't an sl2 an American economy shit box or am I thinking of another fail Saturn model?

We had a sohc neon that could run 14s in the 1/4 at 1000meters and spank most cars on the autox and was even rallied a few times, car was free and the engine cost about 2k to build on 16lbs of boost. Cant even find a running civic with a standard that isnt from 88 for 3k around here. If you wanted a cheap race car the general feeling up untill three of four years ago was buy a first gen standard tranny neon, buy a set of koni adjustables, track pads sticky tires and either drop an srt-4 motor in or the turbo setup from one ecu tune/reflash and call it a day.

I have a buddy who is a huge honda guy had his civic with d16,dished pistons, forged crank, billet rods huge ass turbo no a/c or powersteering and he dumped nearly 20k in that and still has popped rods through the block and it was sitting more than running. So he bought an xj with a 4 banger lol. Actually its quite funny hes a certified ticketed mechanic and always poking fun at my fords and chevys but his shit is the ones always broke down.
