Question about Area 51 models

yes they can both successfully be used from seed to flower.
the xgs 190 has a seedling (65w), veg (130w), and flower mode (190w).
i don't own the sgs 160, but i believe it has two modes... veg (120w) and flower (155w)
you're making a good choice by looking into the a51 panels. i love my 190s

Do you think the 190 would do four plants in a 3'5 x 3'5 foot tenth about 1m x 1m
From my knowledge of LED blue is better for VEG and red and some white better for Flower... How is this achieved with just the white of the 190 model.... I couldnt find anywhere the spectrum's they use

A few weeks ago I was going thru the same process as you are right now. I saw white LED's and thought "that ain't gonna work".
The X uses just one LED throughout the panel. A Cree XTE, times 72 of them. The three different settings just bump some of the lights on, then more, then all of them. The fans are programmed to ramp up along with the lights. At 65W one fan runs slowly. At 130W both fans spin, then at 190W both are spinning faster. I think that's what I saw anyway. Something like that.
The SGS uses two different Cree LED's. I'm not absolutely sure about this, but I believe the two settings on the S turn on just the reds, or the reds and whites both. If that's correct, the way the X switches work is completely different from the S.
For the X, A-51 recommends 24" X 36", and claims a max of 36" X 36". Going by that guideline you'd be pushing it. But maybe you could fill in partway thru the grow with a handful of Cree A19's or something similar?

The SGS is here. Notice there are two different charts - one for the red, one for the "white". While you're there, it's interesting to take a gander at the spiky charts caused by "traditional" grow lights.

I will do some more searching for what to buy as I found some that I thought were going to rock and they turned out to be Eshine/ advanced LEDS.
I like the progrow series of LEDS but they work out to be soooo expensive and i need to include world wide shipping in that price...

All of the good ones are expensive. Some of the not-so-good ones are expensive too.

the A1 for me seem to be the best option so far... for what I need anyway and I will save about $400 on it from the other option I was looking at

Maybe thats the 2014 model.. not sure coz I havent seen one up close.

XGS190 has been good for vegging a 3x3 area, but I had to add some supplemental light for flowering since it didn't seem to cutting it solo. Added in 400w of T5HO 2700k and the buds just exploded immediately.

How many plants did you have going at once in the area... Just curious for my own set up... most guys I have read about speak highly of them, youre one of the first to say it hasnt cut it... did you find it needed extra lighting on the side?

I only noticed the one switch, but lights are off right now. I'll check again in about 4 hours and report back.
I'm running 4 plants in 2 gallon pots (3'x3' canopy). No way in heck the thing had enough to flower out the canopy fully. I noticed a significant leap in growth immediately after adding the T5s. Maybe 2-4 of them would be enough, but I think they are lacking in red light. If I went with pre-made panels again, I'd either go with an SGS or inda-gro.
DIY just got light years easier though. Only reason to go with retail panels is convenience...

I was planning on doing 4 plants in the same area... its a big unit for the amount of watts it puts out... how far was your unit from the canopy?
SGS isnt really an option at the moment due to location..
have you had a look at the pro grow series of lights from hydroponics hut....

they are coming out with a new one according to their website... What I dont get is the 160 model has red but the 190 doesnt... seems strange to me but maybe their is method to their madness.

I bought an A-51 XGS a few weeks ago. I had questions about the switches because mine has 2 switches/3 different intensities. Some forum posts mentioned only two settings and even the A-51 website only mentions two. So I wrote to A-51 and was told that the 2 switch/3 settings function is a brand new feature.
That would explain why Gaius found one switch/two settings on his older model.
