Keeping SEEDS Fresh and Viable....???

A recent thread was all about 'WHAT DO YOU COLLECT?'.
It made me think about starting to collect seeds.
I am naturally a collector.
Writing lists, placing items in order, cataloguing and filing....
For some reason my character is drawn to such behaviour.

Hopefully, before April, I will have ordered my FIRST EVER SEEDS.
I like the idea of attempting to save ONE SEED from every strain I attempt to grow.

HOW DOES ONE STORE SEEDS???
I wish to keep them healthy and useable
(or there is little point to having them).

Dynafem Critical Plus
(from THE ATTITUDE) will probably be my first buy.

I had a film canister of a good sativa and filled with rice. Stored in a closet until I moved in 05, germed well, about 75% viability. The film can was labeled 'haze 1973'.

don't over think it. ;)

I put mine in vials and then put the vials in a plastic margarine tub and into the fridge. The freezer works better but you cannot let them thaw out and refreeze. I fear them thawing from power outage or the freezer does a defrost or something, so no freezing for me.

Good to hear of the guy with the film canister and into the closet. I think he is exceptional though. 20 or 30 years at room temp is a long time. Even in a fridge that is very long.

I keep them in the fridge, some in plastic jars, some in pill bottles, most in zip lock bags. Good for several years in the fridge, I like that top drawer in the door with a lid, for butter I guess? Never used rice before.

Masson jars in a root cellar - long term

diabetic test strip containers (built in desicant) - seasonly

Modern home frezzers and fridges have defrost cycles and also from opening and closing doors create temp. differinces that can cause condensation at humidity levels that are used for storing seeds

i don't like the fridge/freezer idea, too many temp. variables. i store mine in small pill containers, swimming in whole rice. they've found and germinated seeds found in the pyramids. i don't think they had freezers...

Did you happen to catch their storage method in that case? haha.

Hmm think I will try a different method on a control batch. Going on 8 years now and still popping up strong from the fridge :-)

guys he wants to collect. You don't put them in a tupperware container filled with fucking rice....

North of England, if you want long term, a dark glass vial (small) will protect them from sunlight, etc. Put a packet of free silica that you find comes in boxes of brand new shoes n the like in there too to help take any moisture out of the vial. Only if it is air tight 100% can you store it in the fridge long term because a fridge has a crappy RH and moisture will get in there, and fungus or other contaminates.

Another way would be to vacuum pack them. In fact, vacuum pack them and then put them in a dark vial with free silica pack and keep in a dry, cool place; fridge if you must. DO NOT put them in the freezer.

I hope this helps bro. Maybe if you are interested in super forever long term, take a peek into what that world seed bank does to keep all the seed bearing plants of the world in suspension. I think they are in Norway \m/ or maybe it was Iceland. Google will tell you.

Why not? After much research on the subject that's exactly what I've done so I hope you're wrong.

I can't tell you if it has worked out for me b/c I haven't tried to germ them yet but I'm planning on germing some 2 year old seeds next week that were stored in the fridge, inside their plastic packets that are in a tupperware container filled with rice.

In pill bottles, no more then 20 beans per bottle, with a few grains of rice. Then wrap pill bottle with paper towels, and into a light/air tight canister and into the vegtable drawer. Thats how I store them and they stay viable for years.

I also have a film container that has been in my basement for 5-6 years. It was given to me from my Uncle who saved the beans since the 70s & 80s. Says its "that REAL killer skunk, not the bullshit from today" lol

I pop a couple of em here and there (hoping to find a gem!) and I have about 50% rate.

But a tupperware container full of rice isn't exactly collector savvy. Maybe good for short term.
I'm still not understanding why not. Why only good for short term? Are you implying that it's not fancy enough?

I just started germing some 2 year old seeds tonight that were in a tupperware/rice storage situation. We'll see how they do.
