New dangers found will using cfls

Just a link to an article about more health concerns with cfls bulbs, more than just the mercury content, the uv rays leakings from cfls are very dangerous. I never liked cfls before I started growing and now I am liking them less and less. Leds are becoming the way to go imo

CFLs are not going to kill you, just relax and get over it; these danger articles about CFLs have been around for a long time but people learn to get over things so can you please stop trying to arise an issue which is not needed.

I never stated they will kill you, but you should be aware they are not as safe as our government says they are. And being aware of the fact that they are not 100% safe will maybe stop someone from laying next to thier grow and over exposing themselves at close proximity to cfl bulbs. And on another note, you should be educated on the proper disposal of used and or broken bulbs, which most of the public is not aware of. Or the fact that if you break a bulb over your plant, your showering your plant with some level of mercury and then ingesting it. Im just putting it out there because nowhere in the cfl info onthis site does it state any of the precautions you should take while using these lamps. Time will tell all. I will be around in ten years and we will know more then

Been thinking about this a fair bit lately, I've heard people say the same things about fluros but never looked into cfl's or the risk of using them. Was planning on using a bunch for supp. lighting but I might just use some of those cheap ass LED bulbs.

Btw I dont use led lights. And I am still using my cfls, but I still dont like them...although they do grow very well. I was not attacking anyone with this post, yet you all get so defensive.

UV is great for plants in reasonable amounts. are you gunna stop going outside cuz the sun emits UV rays as well!!! oh the horror!!!

dude read your OP.... why else are CFLs dangerous? they may leak UV rays.... UV rays that you get every day of the year when outside. the mercury is the only part of the CFL im worried about.

fact is almost everything in life is dangerous and/or bad for you. im sure people looking for another reason not to use them will like this. for me, im not using them purely due to their toxicity!

I guess thats what my post was aimed towards, children. Theres at least a few of them on this site following you all and trying this stuff. Im not telling you not to use cfls, just know the dangers. The reports published show that the dangers of the uv ray diminish to the point of nothing less than being outside beyond 11" which is relatively safe for pretty much all regular uses that these bulbs are designed for. Needless to say, they are being used for purposes not intended for, aside from grow cfls sold directly from grow shops, but what are those? The same bulbs you buy just repackaged, taylored to growing to make an extra buck, for the most part. Anyways inside of 11" these bulbs can do some real damage. Obviously you growers that have been around the block and are not doing anything with your cfls that would endanger your health, unless they are worse than the studies show, unlikely. Sure would hate to start hearing reports of some kids that have been adversely affected by these things.
