Does it look this way because my light is too close ?

About a week in , light was about 9 inches away hps , cfl was about 5 inches away ..

I think you could just use the cfl til it gets bigger. The roots, I'm guessing are still forming so some plants feed on themselves when that is happening. I'm thinking though, that may not be the case here. How high is your water, and how much nutrients are you using? What size bucket etc. ?

let me guess, your HPS was only 1000 watts so you needed to supplement with a few CFL's

No, im only using 150w hps because its only a week old so after germ I started with that and added the cfl , have not used any nutes yet any suggestions? The water level is at about half the basket high , as in it covers the bottom half of it , also using a 24/0 cycle ...any suggestions would be appreciated

you are burning that poor seedling to death, as all you need for the first week is 23 watt CFL
cut back to 18/6, allow it to cool down a bit, and back off the HPS

Yea...the cfl will do till it is bigger. I'd leave the water right at the bottom of the basket until the roots start showing, then lower the water 1/2 inch to an inch below the basket.

If you have good bubbles, the splashes will reach the top of the inside of your lid and create an environment suitable to get the roots to search. Hope it works out.
