Stereotyping!

OMG someone else that finally sees this.
Ok sorry but I have not met one black dude that can swim good.
So I suppose I am shallow. :mrgreen::peace:

They are excellent in just about every sport imaginable BUT for some reason they just can't swim. I find this kind of odd because many black people live on islands or are from an island where they are surrounded by water. Could never figure this one out.
If I lived near water I would be swimming in it everyday. :blsmoke::peace:

lol seriously....blacks seem to be better at all sports period...well except for swimming, black people dont know how to swim lol ;)

exactly but it is hard not too.:peace:
most of it I think is in light hearted humour.....at least I would hope it is......
I know this isn't the case otherwise we would have no wars but I like to think this way at least.

It is sad to think some people actually firmly stick to some of their steroetyping which they label as 'their beliefs':peace:

we are Stereotyping now and we dont realise.....lol or are we

maybe :peace:but I would say most people don't even know they have been stereotyped. Think about it.
Lacy it is sad but a lot of people really are walking, talking, stereotypes and those people usually go out of their way to be just that.So im not sure which is shallower judging people because of a stereotype,or people going out of their way to act the fool and become a stereotype.:peace:
However, people are not books and I can tell a lot about a person by their appearance. I dont think it makes me shallow. Stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. People can commonly be associated with something.

I mean who the hell has dreads and doesnt smoke?
Who has a mullet and isnt at least a little trashy?
But I know a blonde thats a genius. So of coarse they arent all true and no one should assume they are or else you may offend someone.

Its easy to say black people like fried chicken and watermelon but who the hell doesnt?
You can't judge a book by its cover PERIOD!

thats they problem with it. just because someone has dreadlocks doesn't mean they toke..................
they all all just generalizations. funny but interesting.:peace:

Yes Lacy, well put, they are all just generalizations indeed. Some stereotypes are funny and its good that we all can laugh and make fun of our selves. But where did stereotypes come from?

i think the black - swimming thing has to do with their ancient history.
my grandad told me that in the 1920's no blacks in south africa ever even ate fish.

it was taboo

(a guess) possibly an ancient flood that put the fear of Poseidon into them? (jk)

but seriously if it were not for african americans, we would still be listening to oompah bands

but stereotyping does have a positive effect sometimes.
during apartheid white south africans travelling overseas were all stereotyped as racist. and they therefore had to do something about it all to prove the stereotype wrong. most of the racists could not actually afford to go overseas tho ironically. racism really is a problem of the lower economic classes. damn. now thats stereotyping too innit?

basically we have to stereotype otherwise we would not be able to use general phrases at all that describe groups of people,
like "americans are all ...."
would be better phrased as "most americans are ...."

the big problem is that for the semi-literate, that 'most' just turns into 'all'
without the slightest thought.

unfortunatly many people are guilty of stereotyping. It seems we all have fallen victim to it at sometime or another. Stereotyping opens the door to childhood bullying, hate crimes, and a whole host of other problems.

I'm with 'Avenue Q' on this one. Everyone's a little racist (or prone to buying into stereotypes) whether they like it or not. Thing is, if we're aware of that -- it's easier to catch yourself and suspend that way of thinking until you can make your own judgment. And if your conclusion is that you're dealing with a stereotype - type that stereo on.

... Dude, that made no sense. This weed is great. XD

yeah that is what I am wondering abot also.
they obviously started from somewhere

I honestly was just making fun in an inoocent way. I actually like black people. Not to say i am not racist at all because there is one race that I tend to look at negatively but I am at least conscious of my doing so.
I have often wondered about why blacks do not swim as much as they do. That is an interesting answer. thank you.
I suppose culture and beliefs have a lot to do with our stereotyping.

I don't think blones are dumb at all nor do I think they have more fun either.

Its just an interesting topic and I enjoy readiong all the different viewpoints.

Thanks

Just trying to explian stereotyping you end up doing just that.

Exactly. All or nothing leaving people with little uniqueness.

so true. it becomes dangerous when it is used against one another without any conscious awareness. good point. :)

that is very interesting because I have put a LOT of thought into this as I just LOVE the water. I could go swimming everyday.
well thats what the old guy insisted. i certainly wasn't going to disagree. we grew up in zululand, so i can only speak for the zulus about this.
no clues as to which one?
just tell us what they do thats bad and we can guess which race it is.
No...I'd rather not because it is not a feeling that i am comfortable about. It makes me feel shallow that I am amongst those that are sonsdiered racist but yet I do not have any type of hatred or ill will towards them. I suppose it is just that I do not understand their customs and why they do things that they do.....which in itself is ignorance on my part.

I can't say there are groups of people that i can say that I stereotype except for perhaps this race of people.
Most situations that involve people I try and evaluate individually by the circumstances elvolving around it.

Like i mentioned....I really dislike being judged so i try very hard not to judge others but I honestly don't think it is possible to be totally nonjudgmental. :peace: We all have egos whether we like them or not. :-|
