Making your own seeds

I've never tried, and know next to nothing about it ..... but it doesn't sound that hard.

The reason I bring this up is that I am growing some Grape Stomper x Exodus Cheese (from seed) from another RIU member, and these plants are fantastic! As good as anything I've picked up from any breeder. I'm going to give breeding a go myself once I've done a little bit more research, but from what I've sampled so far this really makes me wonder why I (or any of us) spend hundreds of dollars per pack for genetics that more often than not leave me disappointed. Don't get me wrong, there are some good breeders out there, and they have their place in this game, but the days of buying pack after pack could be over for st0w. The juice just ain't worth the squeeze imo.

Anyone else feeling me on this?

I always make seeds or try to. My method..... Let the male or males live in tent with the females for 3 weeks after light flip.

Take a branch with lots of balls on it and cut it off. Throw the rest of the male plant in trash. Take the cutting and put it in a glass or for me, a pop bottle of water so the end of the cutting is submerged. Put this cutting in a cupboard with small cfl light on 12/12 with the door closed and just enough room for the cord to get out.

Wait till the balls bust open (week or 2) and the yellow dust or pollen is released. Take a female from the tent and using a q-tip, scoop up pollen and wipe it on some of the lower buds. Each little bud should make 5 to 20 seeds. Larf buds are what I pollinate. You can mist the pollinated buds with water a few hours after to kill any remaining pollen if you are worried about that when returning the female to the tent.

The seeds will almost pop out of their calyx and be nice and striped and brown at full maturity.

I'm doing it for the first time myself.

After veg + 2 weeks flowering > males go outdoors to flower for a few more weeks.
When the males have already opened a few sacks and clusters are fully formed>

Cut 8-10 inch off the top of each branch(including cola)
Place them all in a small vase ~2/3 full of water
Place the beautiful arrangement in a large paper grocery bag + slide a 2nd bag over the top(upside down).
Leave it in a dark area for a week or 2 + check progress.

I had a nice amount of pollen only 3 days later + only half the pods were opened.

I use a Q-tip to spread pollen on lower branches with fans off.
Let it sit for ~10-15 minutes + then spray generously with water.

The pistils on the buds you spread pollen on will turn red+recede faster than the rest of the buds/pistils. That's the sign the pollen impregnated her.

I spread pollen when the female is @ ~3 weeks.
It takes ~5-6 weeks for the seeds to fully mature.

I'm not sure how long pollen stays viable but I've got some bagged up for later.

I feel ya, amigo. For the most part, I want no part of making se-eds. I've got years worth in tins if I never buy another one [ like that will happen ]. I do, however, plan to make some SSDD and Ace of Spades babies should I get boys and girls of each. But I'm only doing it to ensure more of those beans, should they become unavailable.

I'm fortunate in not being constrained by budget if there are beans I want, and I'm kinda hooked on the whole shopping/ordering/receiving thing.

But yeah, I agree that crossing two fine strains should produce worthwhile results. I made about 40 Jilly Bean[TGA]/Sour Cream[DNA} beans a couple years back. Have yet to try them, but I really should: Creamy Jilly? Jilly Cream? Sounds like something I could market through Porno Se-eds.

A Jilly Bean/Sour Diesel cross was one of the winners at the American Cannabis Cup in Denver.
I would definitely be popping those home made seeds, sooner, rather then later.

I, myself, am embarking on my first real seed run now.
I've done some pollen chucking in the past and made some Diesel Ryder F2's.
This time I'll be crossing 5 different females to one male stud.
The lucky ladies are Chucky's Bride, Anesthesia, Dance World, and two different Timewreck phenos.
The male is a Cerberus plant, and I'm hoping to add some OG kick, or at least something interesting, to what are already good genetics.

Stow there's various ways. Having a male in the center and just shake it in the room and let pollen go everywhere. Or paint pollen onto a specific bud, or let nature do everything, etc... Good luck too. Its pretty awesome when you have your own crosses that are dank..

I've been wanting to do some more breeding. I have 6 males of various strains. No place to breed without sacrificing my current grow.

I hear ya, amigo. The thing for me, is I love Chucky's Bride [ c-99 and cheese] .I wouldn't add anything to the mix, but when I get down to 3-4 beans of it I'll likely self a branch to make more. Otherwise, if I need to mix a couple of plants, I do it in the joint or vaporizer just before tokin' up. :)

I do understand the appeal of being the mad botanist, however. If you wanna test run some 'jilly cream' let me know...:)

There is soooo much more to breeding consistent fine cannabis seeds than that. But you will have fun either way.
Good luck
I know what you're saying kona. I'm not saying I can germinate a pack of seeds, chose a random male and female and start chucking pollen. Locking down a good male will require pollinating some females and growing out the resulting seeds to see if there is even some potential there ..... but to me it seems like every breeder has one male that they hit every clone only under the sun with and sell the F1's. Not a whole lot of "breeding" or stability going on there IMO. Even the better breeders do this. Bodhi has been using two males (Appy and SL) to knock up every cut floating around for how long now? Gage Green has pollinated every cut under the sun with Joseph OG and sells the seeds for $120 a pack. It just doesn't seem like any breeders are truly working lines and stabilizing them. I've smoked/grown a few home made creations now and I have been blown away with how good they are. These didn't come from sophisticated breeding programs. Just a grower like you and I doing it in their basement. I've got 300+ seeds sitting in my vault and a garden full of nice females ...... so why can't I anticipate similar results?

I hear ya bro. It's not about budget, it's more about principle for me. It seems that every couple months there is a another seedbank ripping people off, shutting doors, or scamming breeders. Then there's the issue of customs that needs to be considered. I find it ridiculous that I send a seedbank $200, then wait for weeks for a package that may or may not arrive ...... then when I get around to germinating the seeds I'm disappointed in the results 90% of the time. Buying seeds has become more about satisfying an impulse for me than having any realistic expectation of ending up with some truly great plants.

On top of that I think it will be very satisfying to create some new crosses of my own. When I switched from using synthetic nutes to making my own organic soil (not saying one is better than the other) it really lit a fire under my ass to learn about soil microbiology and create my own mix. There is a great sense of satisfaction watching your plants thrive in something that you made. I think the same can be said for breeding. Rolling your sleeves up, putting in the time, and seeing the end results. Sounds like fun to me!

Hell yea. Felt that way for a while now. Which is why I have a fridge drawer full of my own crosses. A little advice: It's natural to want to cross your faves, but also cross stuff that you wouldn't think to at first. Some of by best plants came from crosses that weren't my top priority. Wait til you harvest your first seed plant. It will boggle your mind how anyone can charge more than a few dollars a seed. You'll have seeds coming out of your ears.

just remember if you're crossing crosses, or inbreeding, you're going to get variation. a stable line takes 6+ generations. f1's are pretty stable and predictable, but (Grape Stomper x Exodus Cheese) x (Grape Stomper x Exodus Cheese) will produce gs x gs, gs x ec, ec x gs, and ec x ec.

good way to find phenos similar to parents... ;)

So here's the first noob breeding question:

When selecting males, what are the physical characteristics that you're looking for? Or, is it simply a matter of dusting some females and growing out the resulting seeds to see if the male is worthwhile?

Yea I make my seeds. I usually pop about 40 when looking for a good parent. alter the environment to increase odds of that sex. with most turning male, I rub the stems for my desired stench. I look at
growth structure and when
it initiated flowering as
well as how much it stretches.

I avoid hollow stems as a trait, they don't thicken and respond.d as well to supercropping, when my sativas get heavy they tend to crimp, collapse, and fall over.

making seeds is alot better than buying, been growing close to 15 years and purchased my first breeder genetics with the tude bday promo.. for breeding lol

Dude, painters tape. Bend, tape, bend again/tie down. The tape supports the branch at the bend and loosens/unravels as the bend heals. I supercrop hollow stems all the time. It ain't shit.
