Maybe its a cultural thing from over here or whatever, but here if you say you'll fight someone then you better be ready to fight them at the gates of hell if necessary.

Do Irishmen make up a bunch of excuses not to fight someone after going on and on about how they never lost a fight? Are they afraid to leave their neighborhood with out a gun?
