Hi guys

i am a first time grower and have been researching for the last few weeks

i have come to the conclusion i would like to try and grow 2-3 northern lights autoflowering plants

my problem is i am very confused about the lighting, i am planning on doing this in a built in closet that is roughly 2.5 foot wide by 3.5 foot deep by 5 foot high

i have been looking at the hps 250w as i believe that should be plenty of light for them and should give me a good yield my problem is the closet has no ventilation apart from the door if it is open adding holes to walls for ventilation is just is not an option and i am worried that there will be just to much of a heat build up if any of you magnificent expert growers could give me some advice i would really appreciate it

thanks guys look forward to hearing from you

No matter what size light you put in there and regardless of whether you can maintain good temperatures, at some point you are going to have to deal with the smell issue. And since you have no way to do that, I really don't see this working out as you intend. You must find a way to exchange the air in the closet AND have some type of odor control.

You will have to exhaust or forget it. Use cheap pieces of melamine plywood as a door for the room so you can cut a hole in it and run ducting thru it, do the same for the window only make it shorter so the window isnt too far open , drill a couple of holes in the window sash and put a couple of screws in for security.

thanks for the reply greenlikemoney
this was my plan please tell me if it really sounds as stupid as it sounds to me lol

i was hoping that keeping fresh air in the room with the closet and opening the closet door most days while using a fan or 2 to circulate the air round the room and as for the smell i had been looking in to these
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vicks-V-9071-Hepa-Air-Purifier/dp/B00138TCHK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1401557281&sr=8-2&keywords=carbon+air+purifier

i was kind of praying that this idea would work but feel free to bring me the reality of growing :)

and thanks for your reply to *BUDS my only worry about that is that the ducting would then be expelling its air straight in to my street which kind of makes me paranoid as to it being noticed :/

been growing for years, have never owned a carbon scrubber if you keep the plants happy, they don't stink, don't mean to confuse you any more than you are already but it's true and I have taught hundreds of folks how to do it, simply read old threads here posted by Riddleme

Yeah I was busy back then LOL I buried stuff all over and I have been told it takes about 3 weeks to read it all, but every one that did is growin their asses off today.

Got banned 4 years ago for startin my own site just recently started postin here again

calling all noob growers is a good place to start, read the whole thread !!!

the gist is happy plants want a full spectrum of light, they do not want it close, they do not want to touch other plants, they want a balanced nute (non canna specific) and they don't like the adverse pressures caused by venting, they prefer an open space.

Plants use smell to communicate and to ward off predators, they only stink when something is wrong. I know there will be folks that cry bullshit but I've been doin it for years

one more thing, happy plants are more potent !!!

According to everything I've read, 250w would be underpowered for almost 9square feet wheras 400w would give you the recommended 50w/square ft.
You definitely need a carbon filter, insulated ducting and inline fan. Passive intake(s) into the closet and active exhaust to outside. Can you go through the ceiling into the roof space ? or into the wall cavity ? Smell is a big issue - also heat, fan noise and light leaks. You need to have them sorted. You're going to have to do some carpentry ;)

I grow in a toilet off my laundry no exhaust fan just a pedastool fan to blow and windows open fully iam currently growing nl autos and all is good all healthy all nice I use a dig ballastest mh and hps and id recommend if in a closet buy a pc fan cut whole and just direct flow outwards out ur cupboard ducting for a 250w it will get hot but not that hot 2 pc fans 1 blowin in 1 blowin out should be fine

r u saying cannabis thats happy dosn't wreak to high heaven? and that "wreak" is a wonderful smell. its essential oils doing their job. the smell is what makes it what it is. i can't imagine Pineapple Express that didn't smell of citrus. so i'm not understanding your meaning. so can u clarify for me? and can u use words other than "happy" for us professionals?
Carbon scrubbers indoors can be a life saver. Happy/Healthy plants indoors are still going to smell.

ok guys thanks for all your replys

i have had a long think and inspected my grow area a little more and i have decided to go with a grow tent which i can then use the intake duct on an air vent in the room i have never really noticed was there and then the air output with the carbon filter on it to expel the air to an open windows the other side of the tent my only worry is now the fact of 2 fans running while i am trying to sleep as i am doing this in my bedroom is it important to keep the fans on permanently or could you get away with switching them off during the night

That is exactly true !!! does it smell when you harvest it, yes but not as bad, does it smell when you break up a bud and smoke it, yes it does. Does it have that wonderful flavor, sure does. I use the word happy because it is the closest word I could think of that actually describes it in human terms, put 13 humans in an elevator that is stuck, kick on bright/hot lamps and suck half the air out to create a negative pressure,,,,,, how would you feel?

There will be those that say you can't compare plants to humans, but it is very true that they don't like the things I pointed out and if they don't like something they stink. Every grower I have pointed this out to that has taken the steps to eliminate the stuff they don't like can confirm that it totally works and is completely true. Happy actually is the best word to describe it

I have never had a plant that didn't smell. Maybe they aren't ecstatically happy, but they are healthy. No even if correct, not debating, I don't think good advice for a nube who may find out too late that they have odor.

You will want the exhaust running 24-7 or it will smell. And the fans are kind of loud, even with a muffler. It is a white noise. My tent is in my office and I am used to it, but think it would bother me at night. I suppose there is some way to sound proof the closet.

I did read that hanging the fan with bungy cords or something rather than mounting it helps reduce noise but cannot speak from experience.

No need to exhaust it outside. Into the main room is fine.

Have grown over 70 strains and not one of em ever stunk, a few of em were grown as bets from other growers, they said this strain wreaks no way it won't smell, I won every time and they all changed the way they grow once they saw it for themselves

and Noob's are the best folks to grasp this concept because it is not difficult at all and they learn what not to do and how to read the plants better. Every grower I have gotten to before they look on a forum for advice is growing, and all of em had a great 1st grow

The only time my plants smell is when the lights go off....

At first reading I was like "what is he talking about, hogbud's been smokin' some good shit and I want some!"

But then when you read his comparison of sticking 14 people in an elevator, sealing it up and creating negative air pressure.... then I thought about it, and was like "he's RIGHT!"!!!

The way I keep my plants from smelling?

I don't, I use a box fan, and keep the tent flaps open.. get as much air flowing as possible. Once the lights go out, the fans stop turning, so does the air flow, which is then trapped in my room, and slowly dissipating.
