this stuff smells funny...

So I had a bad harvest. It nannered on me, but since it was my first grow ever I kept it. The buds have been curing for about three weeks now, but they all smell pretty strange, not the usual green smell we all know and love. The buds look terrible too, kind of discolored and dried out, and those nasty red hairs. I harvested immediately after I found out they were shit, they still had a few weeks to go.

There were other problems aside from the nanners, or possible contributing factors. The pH was probably a little too high, I think I overdid it when it dropped. I definitely overnuted them at first, I did a soil test for N-P-K levels and they were all through the roof. Basically gave nothing but water the last couple of weeks, but NPK was always high from then on.

So why do they smell so bad? Do all nanners smell and look shitty, or was it the other things I mentioned? Or will curing them longer sort this out some? I admit they do smell "cleaner" now than they did three weeks ago, but I don't see two months of cure fixing this problem completely.

Did you air dry them for a week first? If its got a musty smell, you may have some mold. Any brown/black/gray spots on the buds?

I don't think it was a whole week, around five days probably but yes, I did hang them in baskets. Didn't jar them until the stems snapped. No signs of mold, just pale green buds with red hairs everywhere. It's smokable, it works, I've definitely had better but have also had worse, lol.

sorry about the hermies. my 1st grow was bagseed and they spit out some nanners. i freaked out and chopped them about 2 1/2 weeks early. chopping that early will not give you good results. i had no other plants to worry about, so i should have let them finish.

also if you dried too much, it won't cure properly and it will smell and taste bad.

Haha ur funny. Chloroform is something else. What I think u meant is chlorophyll. It's a pigment in the leaf that makes the leaf green. That chlorophyll will break down over time. It is what makes the bud smell like grass clippings and is why some ppl refer to the buds as smelling "green".
Nanners are normal although you may not always get them. I almost always get a few. They are the plants desperate attempt to pollinate itself in the last days of it's life.
I am not understanding your dilemma completely as nanners don't make for a bad harvest and neither do red hairs. A bad smell if it's not mold will usually change as chemical processes in the bud change and certain things break down to reveal other more pleasant smells. So my advice is to continue with your cure and wait it out.
As a last ditch effort you can take your entire harvest and make kief. That's where you get a silk screen like the kind you would use for making t-shirts and sift the buds over the screen gently and the golden trichomes will fall through the holes in the screen. After a few minutes, or an hour, depending you can scrape up all that gold dust, kief, and put it right into your bowl and smoke it. The hit is intense. It's stronger than smoking plain buds because you're getting all the good stuff and none of the bad. Try it on your harvests that you're not happy with so nothing goes to waste.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I had temp and lighting problems throughout a lot of their life, when I was told I had nanners I didn't even know what that meant, lol. I guess I could have waited a couple of weeks to finish them out, I guess that might be the reason here, because I definitely didn't dry too long. Don't think I'll make kief with it, I did make hash of course. The problem is it has been a little over two weeks curing, but the smell is still there! It's way less, but damn...

I've got four more plants in flower that came from bagseed. So far no nanners, and I did a way better job of raising these guys. Hopefully I'll be safe, growth seems much stronger on them to be sure.
