hello all,

I am working on a new setup and am looking for input on what air conditioning unit to go with. I have two seperate rooms and am planning on having a unit for each. Right now I am only purchasing on for the smaller rooms, as my kids wont need the big space for another 2 months:

18ftX10ftX8ft

Right on I plan on getting a stand alone unit, but dont know a whole lot about the cooling process. Could somebody give me some input/point me in the right direction of some information to brush up on?

With a stand alone unit it needs to be vented. The one I purchased from HD was 289.00 and cools my space which is close to yours. I has a 5 inch venting duct which I had already had an opening for....6 inch anyway. The heat that vents out the duck was around 100 degrees that I measured.

I use an LG 8000btu portable for my 5x10x7 tent. I made an intake tube attatched to the a/c unit to direct cold air into my fresh air intake. I ran the exhaust out my window as well. I used 6" exhaust ducting.

What kind of ducting did you use exactly? I have an LG portable AC, the ducting that comes with the window installation kit doesn't seem to be a standard size (though I think 6" would technically work), is cheap, and needs replacing. They don't even sell the installation kits anywhere I know of, except thru mail order/online parts distributors and it is kind of asinine.

First off my room is in the basement so I had to change the way they recommend to vent through the window. I used 6 inch drier duct and secured it to the 5 inch that is on the AC and vented it out through the new hole with lovered cover on it to the outside

Also I forgot to mention I bought everything at both Home Depot or Lowes

here ya go. works perfectly. this was at my old house. this set up used a 6" 440cfm fan to "help" the hot air thru the 40' of 6" ducting then out of my basement window.
note: I don't recommend putting a fan there like I did. the bearings burnt up in about 5 months and the fan seized on me.

currently I use the same setup as in the pic below. but now I don't use the 6" 440cfm fan, and only run it to about 20' of 6" ducting, then thru a dryer vent out my basement window. I have no problems with any exhaust flow. my LG unit has been working flawlessly on 12-12 for almost 18 months now. I did buy a 5 yr replacement warranty on the unit. which ran me 199.99 plus 299.99 for the unit itself. I like warranties. I even have a 5 yr warranty (499.99) on my 55" plasma tv (free replacement if anything goes wrong, minus screen cracking)

Very cool (no pun) to see so many raving about that LG. Cheap enough, that's for sure.
