when should i flip to 12/12?

If I ran 16 clones in coco 2 gal smart pots in a 4.5 x 4.5 x 6.5 tall tent under a 1000 watt hps air cooled how high should I veg till I flip to 12/12 any suggestions id like to get at least a 1 per if not 2 if im lucky

From my understanding the only limit to how long you can veg is your container size, as the plant can of course become rootbound and suffer at a certain point if it outgrows the container...If you can keep the plant healthy and had a container large enough to prevent it from being rootbound, then in theory you could veg forever I think...someone with more experience than me will chime in and correct me if this is inaccurate.

No one can give you an exact time frame for when to flip to get a certain yield because there are too many factors ie; strain, nutes, conditions, etc etc...But also from my limited understanding, the longer you veg the bigger yield you can get. As a general rule of thumb (not to an exact science) the plants will double in size from where you ended the vegetative cycle and when you chop it down (assuming you let it fully mature in flowering). Keep that in mind so you don't end up with your plants outgrowing your tent.

I use 2gallon to flower..start in 4inch pot for 2-3 weeks depending on strain ..transplant to 2 gallon veg another 10 days and flower..there about 16inches going in and finish up between 3-4foot when done..I also have the same setup as you ..my yeilds is always shy of a pound..I could be doing a lot better but I'm happy with that I don't sell ..so it's all PercyPercy

You'll want to flip sooner than later if you want all 16 plants in that small tent. Unless intentionally aiming for a SOG, then i'd personally just grow less plants, but larger. The more plants, the more work, the more issues, the more stress; and if you're not even sure when to flip, then you might have a pretty wild few months ahead of you trying to keep 16 happy.

Man, that tent is going to be a jungle with 16 plants in there. Remember, the bigger the pot, the bigger the pot. I'd run 4 plants in the biggest smart pots you can fit in that tent. Just my opinion.

Its about 1 per foot so 1 gallon containers max? 2 to 3 if you use plastic bag pots. I would flip about a week or two before it looks like your space is filling up because it will when they double in size during flower. And you will lost yield and quality if you let them overcrowd your space.

yeah I completely missed the part where he said 16 plants. Gonna be crowded - can't veg too long without excessive training and I'm not sure it'd be worth the time. I'm only going to be running 4 plants in 3 gallon smart pots n a tent that's ~60% the width/length of your tent (same height), so that'd be like stuffing 10 plants in my tent...wouldn't be worth my time IMO. I'd prefer to just run like 6 decent sized plants n a tent that size n not deal with all the extra work to get a similar yield. There are ofc people out there that can maintain a dense jungle like that - I personally wouldn't want to.

And he hasnt said anything about SOG or if he knows how to do that properly.
I think he's gonna have issues but lets kick it around ! I would expect heat issues in that tent as well but what do ya'all think ?

I would veg them until they are about 18-20 inchs. Alot of it depends on the genetics and how you are training them or not training them.

I run a SOG garden in a 4x4 flood tray under a 1k in a great white hood. I typically flower between 35-40 plants at a time at various stages of flower. I run a 2-3 week cycle depending on which strains I have in the tray. Every 2-3 weeks I add 8-12 clones that are about 8 inch tall. This allows me to harvest multiple strains every couple weeks. Sometimes depending on the cycles I will harvest a few plants each week. I've been growing this way for over 4 years now, it works great and I never run out of weed.

Now I'm not saying that if you top all your plants and grow them into bushes 16 will fit. But if you don't top them or let them get huge and bushy they should fit fine. I believe your 2 gallon pots should be about a foot in diameter so the floor foot print should fit. However 9-12 plants would leave you alot more room for your fans, and for light to get lower on the plants.

Either way be prepared to take them all out of the tent to work on them cus you won't have room to move in there.

I like growing more small plants rather then less large for a couple reasons. The biggest being I can spend less time vegging plants, and more time flowering them. I also like having a perpetual harvest which is easier to do with a bunch of smaller plants then only having a couple large ones. Obviously if you have room for a bunch of large plants that would be the best way to go !

oh I know they will fit I don't plan on any training really if I lst them that for sure would be too bushy I will definitely have to do some light lower pruning but I think the 1000 watt will penetrate the canopy just fine and im use to the whole pulling plants out and watering them every day or two

16 plants for 4.5'x4.5' isn't overcrowding at all. SOG purists might even call 16 plants in that area, not a true SOG.

16 plants in that area is perfect!! When you should flower depends if it's from seed or clone, but in general, you want to start flowering when the canopy will be totally filled out after the stretch is finished. It takes a few grows with a strain to know when exactly to flip such that the canopy fills out with minimal overlap..

1000W is perfect for the area too. A little less than 50W/sqft.

So when u run em like that are u pretty much just lolipopping n getting a canopy of small/medium sized colas ? seems like all the lower foliage could be removed w/ tht kinda setup but Idk

I tend to "lollipop" my plants, and remove the bottom few branchs. I mostly grow single cola plants if you will, so usually I have a large main cola, and a couple smaller ones down the stem with little to no popcorn. Depending on the strain I get between 14-30 dried grams per plant of AA nugs.

And what's wrong with running a 1000 watt light over them..bigger the light the better and if he is running 16 plants in that space...it would be sog style...its not the norm to run 16 plants in 2 gallon in that space...i run at the most 12 plants in 2 gallon pots in the same space with 3 week veg and its packed out by harvest time...just my thought happy

imo to grow sog style properly it down to strain ...and usually strains that grow a single cola are ideall for sog..if you flower in small pots and veg to 6/8 inches you will get a single cola with very small branching if any ...
