Harvest/Curing Guide

I was wondering what your thoughts are on this plan for harvesting and curing:

1. Cut down, remove fan leaves and hang upside down in dark at 55% and 70 degrees.

2. After 5-7 days, fully trim and leave it lay out on a drying rack for 5 days.

3. Jar and burp once a day for 6 hours for a full 7 days.

Anyway, these are the steps I was planning on… Harvest, trim, cure. Drying time is 10-12 days and cure time 7 days.

What do you think of these numbers??? Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated! I am new. Thank you.

You really can't go by an exact timeframe. You plan is good but you need to constantly check them during the drying process. Drying times vary a lot depending on the environment. Several factors determine the environment.

Thanks BWG. Any pointers for what to look for before trimming and what to look for before starting to cure in jars?

I smoked a little now and it's been about 5 days. It crackles a little, so I know it must be wet now, but then again, it's going to be sitting on the rack, which is also drying right?

Cut you babe down invert the bush, removing fan leaves , once done cut the branches into 12" sections trimming lightly,
cut a hook in the stem end or insert bent out paper clip, hang on a pre rigged drying line at your 55%Rh at 70f

Hang the plant their until you bend a branch and it snaps, like when you break a dogs leg with a distinct snap or crack, maybe 2 weeks?

then to the cure, which after 7 days of repeated open and closing is really a personal thing

The biggest issue with your plan is having to trim the bud whilst limp...dude never do that ..fuck that ..you will be there all day ...lol

I thought that's how everyone wanted it lol… trim all the leaves off… lol

I leave the fan leaves on when the branches are hanging upside down.
This way the fan leaves cover the buds to protect the thc crystals from light leakage,
airborne dust particles (fine hairs included), bugs such as nats and flies etc...that crap on buds.

No ...no only recently I have started to just remove the fan leaves, in the past it was the smaller water leaves that I removed tto leaving just the bud, then my friends found that I had over dried much of my bud, it can go crumbly, and messy, I prefer sticky, either way avoid drying ...then picking that will knock you ...lol

To a point, leaving the fan water leaves on will help the buds from over drying.

Have a really clean room with no bugs. I left the fan leaves on before and it makes the room smell horrible. I think the cloriphil makes it stick and I heard it adds more salts to the buds which isn't good for taste… Not sure if anyone can confirm this?

Do you think I should start trimming now? As it is some what crispy and I'm going to leave it on the rack for at least 4-5 days… Any disadvantages to starting early?? The one thing I don't want to do is over dry.

You might want to check out Boveda Packs for curing. Myself and several other members have had great success using them. They help take some of the guess work out of it.

This is the correct 'old man' way of doing it, or when you have to leave it in the field for a few days, unlike those Colombian growers who just drop it in the field, but from them you got great colors gold etc, also much compost, Milo's method is the correct way, only shows how much I have deviated over the years to please 'customers' ...lol

The Boveda jars are great but expensive, easier to just include the humidity gauge from your grow room, to give a rough indication, even a little sea weed like in Africa, just to get the right texture, as an indicator

The Chlorophyll ...I too hate, but thats why you cure and dry, to dissipate the sugars which break down over time and once dried, but it don't add salts, 1- 2 weeks before harvest flush well with 3 times the volume of the pot, allow to recover under dim light or overnight, one the day comes butcher in the morning, have everything ready.

Thanks for the clarification. Anyone ever use those super small RH meters to put into the jars? The temperature you aim for from my memory is 55%… Is that correct?

I bought one of those little RH meters and put it next to my room RH meter. It was $10 from a cigar shop, but I don't think the meter is accurate… :(

If you are speaking of my pic, the pak is inside, there is a hygrometer in lid showing humidity level

The meter just monitors the humidity.
I use to monitor humidity while curing to guide when to burp jars, when I get to stable desired humidity, for me 60-65%,
I throw in a Boveda 62% Hum Pak, seems to work well for storage
