Returned the bulb for the e-start. I put my eye h hps in the other day and it's working correctly.
As far as lumens, I have read that lumens and spectrum are not synonymous with each other as much of the center spectrum in each bulb (mh or hps) is much less than the spectrum the bulb is designed for. So the overall lumen output will be lower, but the specific range of light will be much higher than what the meter reads.
So, do the bulb manufacturers base their lumen output on the combined output across all frequencies or do they base it on the output of the peak frequencies?
It'd be cool if they made spectrum-specific lumen meters. Do they?

Oh come on, bulbs don't become unusable after a single flowering or depreciate so much that yields decrease. That sounds like a waste of money.
Seems like a year is what many go with. 3 grows maybe.
Anyone want to chime in?

I didnt say un useable, but if you veg then flower with the same bulb it should be replaced every grow. If you veg and flower under different bulbs then after flower you move the bulb to veg with and use a new one for flower.
To me a new bulb is cheap 1000w ushio is only 75-80 locally phillips are even cheaper.
Quite a few people run 400w bulbs in magnetic 600w ballasts and simply replace the bulb every grow
