I'm working on it. Wish I had thought of this YEARS ago. I could have had 1000 Native's talking to their Bands and members, instead of only a few...
That's the first step - so many of them are addicts, or recovering addicts, or suffering with a slew of mental and health problems."why rely on white mans money when they could be self sufficient?"
It's easier. They think.
Hand outs don't work. They are the only ones responsible to change who they are!
Just like Addicts!!!!
Hmmm...they have been living what you call that "utopian" lifestyle for thousands of years. It has only changed in the last three hundred years. Only one thing has changed in that time frame....i've always wished they'd push us all to be more self-sufficient and get off our big oil addiction and current earth destroying habits.. be the model the rest of the world aspires to.
make reserves a place of pride instead of an eyesore.
i don't mean this offensive (and am going to have a hard time explaining my vision) but they have a great opportunity to create a sort of utopian community with a sustainable lifestyle. they have the land, people, and community.
i'm sure the res would be less depressing if it were a better place to live.
why rely on white mans money when they could be self sufficient? almost like their ancestors but in a futuristic setting.
wont deny it'd take a lot of doing (and i honestly don't ever see it happening) but i just think it'd be so fitting for the natives to show us green living can work, and live non destructive to the environment.
that's always been my pipe dream for them.
Maybe they want to stay at home and "take hand outs" because they have lost hope. The real problem will show, when the WORK comes.
Most would rather stay home and take hand outs.
When they start telling us that they need more...we give it to them to quiet them down. Self governing my ass.
We pay them to stay put.
I know I would if I were them. I KNOW I couldn't handle half of that shit.Maybe they want to stay at home and "take hand outs" because they have lost hope.
lol true enough ehHmmm...they have been living what you call that "utopian" lifestyle for thousands of years. It has only changed in the last three hundred years. Only one thing has changed in that time frame....
why cant he get a job in town?My one friend LOVES work...he begs to come up to camp to work. And he is the HARDEST working human person I have ever met.
But he can't just go to the city, and find a better job. Everyone he has known his entire life, pretty much, live in Martin Falls. He also has 2 small children and a lady to think of. If they moved to a place with more jobs, their support system of friends and family would disappear.
If there was work for him within the community, I'd bet my life he would be ALL OVER it. A lot of people I know would.
Especially if it was growing the pot!
marten falls is in ontario in the northern woods.....did it suddenly become an island last i check? lolWell, moving from a city is always rough...for sure.
But moving away from a fly-in community? UNless you're rich - you can't ever go home again. Those flights are PRICEY! And your family can NEVER visit? Or NEVER see you again?
I don't know - it sounds like a rock in a hard place to me....
Everyone I know flies there. Always. Its about 2 hour float plane from Nakina. Surrounded by bogs, rivers, lakes, marsh.marten falls is in ontario in the northern woods.....did it suddenly become an island last i check? lol
Everyone has been trying to build a road up here for years! Cliffs actually just pulled out of the Ring of Fire not too long ago - because the government refused to build a road/ railway.shouldnt there be a bridge there? like most places like that they should be a bridge, i mean overall its a pretty remote location if there were jobs who would buy from it?
i mean thats a pretty fucking remote location....not much anyone could do for them....
yeah thats sad...extremely sadI know fly-in communities are not ALL Natives, for sure. But it's hella hard for them.
The Natives in Baker Lake, Nunavut, have the MOST EXPENSIVE groceries in Canada (to my knowledge). A 2L jug of cranberry juice is 13.00. Take a little plane to the nearest gold/ drilling company - and they have an endless budget for food - and things get wasted and thrown away...
Sad really.
yeah this is the most current i could find http://www.thestar.com/opinion/commentary/2014/06/09/igniting_the_ring_of_fire_no_one_has_a_plan.html looks like either side is not doing too much about itEveryone has been trying to build a road up here for years! Cliffs actually just pulled out of the Ring of Fire not too long ago - because the government refused to build a road/ railway.
Actually, the government refused to OK the possibility of a road, for now. I'm not really positive who the onus of building it would fall on.
Whew - just read that! Alright, I do have some points, not speaking from all natives everywhere - but the ones I have worked/ lived with.why cant he get a job in town?
i keep trying to find the words to make this make sense, but why are we differentiating the differences between the rest of canada and the natives.
we should all be united with one, and the natives should still be able to go to school for free, have tax exemption no licenses for fishing, hunting ect.i would never promote or suggest taking away what little privileges we gave them
The problem is when you live in a small town, like mine you have to move to for work, native or not. thats how you make a living , thats whats wrong with canada not a lot of jobs in smaller towns. so most people drive to the bigger towns to work either have a commute or move
theres no difference between me having to move from my small city to Sudbury to get a job in my career field where i have to leave my family friends and support , than your friend. were just people ....native, white, whatever were people and thats the disadvantages of living in smaller areas. no jobs.
it makes it seem like its heartbreaking for him cause hes native, but its a regular thing for me cause im italian?maybe i too dont want to leave my support system...
I guess the natives in my small town are luckier because the rez is actually in town and not 20 mins out of town, but , we have many campy areas like wawa, and hamilton beach where people live and guess what, to work they drive in...cause theres no jobs in wawa or hamilton beach thats just the sad fact of living in a remote location...
either commute to work or move dont make it into a race issue.
The simple fact of the matter is given the economy of the rez;s even if you did put up more job locations, no one would buy from the businesses. Because technically white people arent allowed to buy from the natives. I go to the rez to buy my cigerettes.., so I drive there, they dont question me because I look native and can speak the native language in my area, but as soon as a white person comes into the store they refuse sale.
And since most natives dont have jobs because they are either unable to or dont want to, or whatever the issue, their businesses wont stand to produce enough money to stay ergo , no one would get hired ..its like a catch 22. so how do we fix it without making this into a race war?
the simple matter of fact is the current generation of kids are lazy, this isnt about being native, or white the generation going into college /uni right now is fucking lazy.
I certainly wish more native highschoolers would take advantage of going to college/university for free because why shouldnt they? they could create a better life , they have the means to do so...but do they have willpower and motivation...and i simply flat out refuse to have anyone tell me because of their bad living conditions they have no motivation ..
I lived in terrible conditions, i was a very poor child...i grew up very very poor barely any food, no heat in the house in winter getting evicted ect.
so no i dont take excuses , if you want something youll achieve it. but the goddamn current generation just wants shit handed to them native or not.
some one already mentioned that growing pot for natives would be a pretty bad idea i agree, not because they shouldnt be allowed but because of the current stigma in our country towards pot, if we allowed them to grow marijuana, im sure most would use it responsibly,...but given the high crime rate and drug selling of most of the current generation it would also create alot of bad apples to pop up.
and that would just make it worse on the native culture and people.
