when ppl say cfls are not hot they are talking about the small bulbs where you use like a bunch of them. the large are just plain too hot for most cabinets. i cant imagine how hot the 200w cfls get. like a campfire over your plants

CFLs put out tons of heat because they aren't especially efficient. If heat is a problem you can build a state of the art light that is much more efficient than CFL from Cree CXA or Bridgelux Vero COB LEDs. If you can put together a PC you can put together one of these lights. In fact, you may already have many of the parts laying around already (CPU coolers, thermal paste, PC fans, 12V power supplies.) You can make your room arbitrarily bright with as low heat output as you want, it depends on how much you want to spend up front. It will also last 10+ years or more with no lamp replacement. Check out some threads on the LED forum from SupraSPL, Mr. Flux, Positivity, Captain Morgan, etc...

Man you guys rock! FrozenChozen I just followed your thread, you definitely know how to work with small spaces. I see now that CFL's are not the easy answer I was looking for.

Ok I guess I should post my expectations, goals and concerns as I research.

My major concern is not heat, rather its safety. I don't want to burn down a house for a few plants. I don't want smells going through the house and are manageable with filters and air scrubbing products. Something that is not noticeable on an energy bill. Basically I want something that my wife won't realize is there or concern herself with.

My goal is that I want a safe build that produces enough grow that sustains a small amount of smoking for life. Does that statement sound to bold to you? It should but that is my goal.

My expectations are that I take my time. If I have to budget build over the next 5 years I will. If I have to become fanatical about my outside garden and lawn care to mask my obsession I will. If I have to change habits I will. The house I am moving into is where I will die, when we bought it we bought it as a house we would never move out of. Whatever I build will be permanent and considered an investment. I refuse to buy weed from a 20 year old kid when I am 40 or 50.

The day I graduated high school I went to a buddies house and we were in his room. We had a joint of the shittiest weed you probably have ever seen. We were blowing it through a toilet paper roll out his window. His dad walked in looked at us and walked out. My buddy almost shit himself and started freaking the fuck out. 5 minutes later his dad walks in with one of the most bad ass ceramic pipes I have seen to this day. Around the pipe was some of the best weed I have seen. He sat down on his sons bed and took a hit off of it. He blew it out the window handed his ceramic pipe to my buddy, his son, and said "Don't tell your mother". Everyone in the room was in shock.

THAT IS WHO I WANT TO BE.

That being said thank you all for helping me and keeping the forum clean from personal feelings and not attacking each other like they do on almost all the other threads. I can't wait to start my build, especially after seeing FrozenChozens page on his home strains. This will be an epic adventure for sure!!

I bold that statement because it describes me EXACTLY..... After switching from cfl to hps I feel more comfortable running 1000 watts of hps in my poorly ventilated closet for 24/0 my entire veg cycle than running 200 watts of cfl 18/6... March was my heaviest power bill and it was about $100. check out a gator filter for all of your scrubbing and filtering needs, ITS THE BEST FILTER OUT THERE! I want you to SEE that the energy cost is 100% worth it, last crop I did ran about 4 months with 2 months of 12/12 flower (for all intents and purposes we'll say that counts as 1 month in cost terms..) I cropped over 300 grams almost 12 oz, spent less than $300 in electric; to me a half pound is worth at least $500 right?

here's a copy of my power bill usage... figure out your kilowatt/hour rate from your power company and do some comparison with the amount of power I use with your rates....

F chicken I spoke to ntgw about this yesterday yes gator r good filter but why does he need to spend so much on it when u can get one for half that money that does as good a job same applys for the full setup buy good stuff but it doesn't have to always b the top of the range gear.

ahh i see. if i ever increase my grows i will keep them in mind. i only grow 4 plants so i can get away with the the cheap filter for now. the most of my setup funds are going on a good light first.

Gator is the best hands down.... Don't skimp out because you'll save a couple bucks... Gators have twice as much carbon media, they're expandable, and last longer than any $100 amazon job. If you want a cheap disposable filter, check amazon, if you want something that will grow with your system, last twice as long, and work better at removing ALL of the smell check out what gator has to offer. I haven't heard of anyone being upset at their product, only good reviews, I love mine....

im gonna use a 6 inch fan and filter combo for my 4 plant grow. no its not the best but im not a commercial grower. never will be. im just pot head that wants good weed. use whatever works and you can afford.

i swear by phresh filters been running the same one going on 3 years now without a bit of smell i got mine on ebay on sale for 75
