Metal Halide questions.

So I was gifted by a friend a MH lamp, 400 W with ballast and everything ready to go, I must admit a great gift! However there are a few concerns which I am actually very frightened about ...

1st - The heat, the ballast is attached to the reflector and where the lamp is, the ballast and the tops of the reflector could be reaching to over 90 Celsius, I know MH runs hot, but is this hot normal? I can't stand to touch it for more than 2 seconds and even this is painful to a degree, but doesn't leave a burning on my finger.

2nd - The noise, the noise is confirmed to come from the ballast, I investigated and it appears it's coming from vibrations, I tightened the bolts on the lamp itself this decreased the vibrations a bit, I also added some tire material to furthermore decrease vibration sounds and now it's bearable, still the noise happens only when the lamp is turned on for 15 - 20 minutes if it was cool before, or if it wasn't it happens in up to a minute. If it is cool, then the noise is just a very tiny buzzing which is hardly noticeable with another background sounds.

3rd - Once the lamp is lit, it loads for up 3 - 4 minutes, before it's fully loaded it flickers a lot and very quickly.

4rd - I understand that the lamp is a Quartz Metal Halide, but something REALLY strange happened. First off in the arc tube (the second tube inside the big bulb tube) there are orange-ish dots, I think this is fine, the lamp had been used before for a certain amount of time, however after 18 hours of use now I notice that the arc tube's defect-looking big circle like thing which is a bit over the other regular surface has now been colored with a white-ish powder-like juju ...

- The bulb, showing the orange-ish dots and the defect-looking circle-like thing in the middle of the arc tube. Right now it's about not noticeable especially from the image. But check on the third image!

- Here you can clearly see the defect-looking circle-like thing in the middle of the arc tube which is now painted sorta white-ish with a powder-like looking thing, but in fact it doesn't fall off whilst I'm moving the lamp.

- Video showing the buzz when the lamp is fully loaded/heated.

I am confused whether all this I experience is regular behavior or something is wrong ... Appreciate all the help and happy growing everyone!

seems normal, except for the noise. for your heat concerns, just keep good ventiing, add a fan, should work.

Even the strange orange-ish dots and the white colored fragment on the arc? Heat and noise doesn't fear me much, the ballast is magnetic - ancient stuff so that should be it.

honestly im not sure about that one, i just recently got a MH myself. but i see there are alotta diff kinds, with similar effects at startup. so it should be okay, but best to wait for a better answer. sorry

Of course, mate I appreciate your super quick response! We can surely drop off the startup issue now. :) It was actually my biggest concern as I read that flickering does indicate end of life cycle but I was confused how exactly they imply it. Though the behavior I witnessed seemed normal even to my inexperienced eye. Again, great thanks and happy growing!

HA ....I got one of these ...lol small world dude!!! OK any doubts replace the bulb always keep a spare bulb(best if its a used one U know it goes) ...lol
there is no fan in there and the whole light is one unit.
Avoid opening this up in a confined space as it is full of white asbestos,
and now illegal in many places and serious dangerous,
if in doubt get it serviced by a technician will cost very little

You got me scared sir ... Any easier way I can control the low power factor operation and high current so it stops over heating? If that be the case ...
Though the ballast is fairly colder than is the tops of the reflector.
Also there's no signs of burns or char anywhere on the whole lamp.

I will check if there are any swollen capacitors ^_^ I'm a programmer and I have a decent hardware knowledge too, finally it's getting to some use.

That's a pretty normal noise for a parking lot halide. I have never HEARD a capacitor go out, they usually just go out.

Chuck! Well Estevez, not Norris, pretty much what I am honestly thinking and hoping ... I know this is ancient, but still, my plants just love it. I'm about to make a journal and this lamp is crucial to my whole life in the next year!

From what I understand, it's not as bad and not as old yet, also old but gold, old stuff is usually stronger than new stuff, world's tendency.

well, they hang those lights off of buildings to light up the parking lot, NEVER heard of one blowing and burning down the building, BUT i have heard them buzzing when they are on, Just sayin.

they wont burn down straight away but u leave it on 18/6 over a month period im pretty sure it wile raise the risk of it burning when do they leave parking lot lights on for 18 hours a day they are made for 12

well ur right man i have 4 jb ballest 12 years old still going i get them serviced once a year all i am saying is get it checked if all is good go for it like i said i cant watch it for 18 hours a day so anything can happen in that time better to be safe then sorry

if there was ANY risk of a light burning down a building because it was on 18 hours a day instead of 12, NO insurance company would insure that building. That is ridiculous.

this I agree with.

Absolutely, I appreciate all the input and effort guys, this is what I'm trying to understand, is it safe or not. :)

So, let shit get interesting, checking for swollen capacitors, will take pics and upload them! About that crystal thing which is cancerogenic, I didn't got any of it. xD
