Rapists, only slightly better than atheists

According to a study, atheists are less trustworthy than rapists to the "average American. "
I think this is a couple of years old, but shocking.

This attitude has to change.

Most of you probably think of me as an ardent Christian, and indeed I am a Christian, however I am an atheist or philosophical Christian.

Why do you think atheists are so looked down upon in this country?

Atheists are only looked down on by people who are religious and who gives a shit what those deluded zealots think on the subject.

It sounds like you might be leaning towards agnostic.

It's basically aiming to live your life to biblical standards because you think it is a model way to conduct yourself.
 
Atheists say what everyone else thinks. The idea of heaven makes it easy to forget about all the sick and suffering all around of the world. Surely if there is a heaven their suffering will be rewarded with everlasting nirvana and all we have to do is say our prayers and be a good person and we'll be there too-we can live our lives in our 4 bedrooms houes and drive our big suvs to soccer practice and not worry about our less fortunate friends, after all life is short and if they are good people they will make it to heaven. When the idea of an after life vanishes, and we realize that the sick and suffering will never know anything other than that, we all realize we have blood on our hands for letting our fellow human beings suffer when there is plenty of resources in the world for everybody. Religion serves so many psychological purposes for the feable minded things like atheisim scares them.

You can't be atheist and a Christian. To be atheist you don't believe in the story of Christ

You have a valid point there. One can argue semantics, but I agree you can be an atheist and still consider yourself a good "christian" without taking the bible litterally. There's however nothing unique or original about the useful parts of the bible and you can learn to be a good person without the dessert fairytales. Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth is highly outdated and contains too much fiction.

Again, you can argue semantics and pretend a "good christian" is equivalent with someone "believing" in christ (what's with the caps lol - just playing Devil's advocate...), in reality that is not always the case. I agree it won't make you a "good christian" in the eyes of believers but let's face it, there are as many variations of the interpretation "good christian" as there are people that refer to themselves as a good christian. You and I certainly don't determine for someone else what it means - if only it were that easy.

So, by taking the good advice that is still valid today and not taking the stories literally. By taking it the way the stories were meant before they were plagiarized, rewritten and bundled. Some people need to be bullshitted to act civil... like 90% of the planet. If some can derive from that the intention and see through the bullshit and end up calling themselves atheist christians I consider that a good thing, or at least a step in the right direction. I do agree a better label should be made up but if 'christian' will lose its strict original meaning because of it I consider that a good thing too (plus no more reason to cap it). Maybe more people will start to realize they can be a christian without believing the nonsense and while still being able to be an atheist they will be less eager to insist on spreading and making others believe the nonsense too.

You can be an atheist and still be a good person. You can't be an atheist and be a good christian

You've basically hit the nail on the head.

I listen to Dawkins and he says it's mostly terrible evil with a few nominally decent things sprinkled in.

I think the problem arises when people read the bible like a novel. Front to back with equal importance given to all parts.

Having a decent understanding of theology and how to interpret it according to Christian ideas. Some parts abrogate others. The abrogated parts are still important.

Most atheists don't understand how that works and see a contradiction where none really exists.

The wisdom of the Bible is timeless.

For dessert dwelling goat headers they possessed wisdom beyond their station.

There is a reason Jews circumcised male babies three days after birth. I can't recall it now, but it has to do with proper clotting, healing and infection prevention.

I like the principals, I don't believe the bullshit.

In order to be a christian, you have to believe in god. It's at the very core of the belief. You can be an atheist and then become a christian over time. You can be an atheist and pretend to be a christian, but you can't be both simultaneously.

You can actually live a righteous life without the bible. Bible is full of errors and misinformation
