MH for the stretch?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone use MH for the first part of bud? When the plants go ape shit on growth. I had an experience with it last harvest.

So I was pretty strapped for cash last harvest and a HPS bulb burnt out a few days into bud.

Now I know what your thinking, what kind of lame fuck in the dope game is strapped for cash? Well, I was.

Moving on, I replaced the HPS with a MH. I was smoking some really good kush at the time and it didn't occur to me that the the stretch would be one like I have never seen. Indicas where stretching like I haven't seen sativas do. It was a huge tangle of vegetation and buds.

I am going to see if using a MH instead of HPS for the first part of stretch will help my single cola plants produce a bigger bud. I will just tame them as they stretch but keep them single cola, or at least try to.

My main theory behind this is: Longer main stem: bigger top cola. Also, more bud sites for people that grow the bushes.

the "stretch" is normal during the pre-flower stage and can last 2 weeks, that's when the plant will double in size at least (we are talking a 12/12 schedule) but the plant can still grow but not that fast after the pre-flower stage into the flower stage

I've used an MH on a plant with very little stretch in hopes it would stretch a bit :( No such luck. It was the same as when I used my HPS i'd say, about 2-3 inches and that was it.

Not MH, using LED's for veg, then CMH for flowering. What I've found the last couple of rounds, when I wanted stretch was putting them @14/10 for about 8 - 9 days under the LED's before flipping them to 12/12 under the CMH. Not sure if it's the LED's or the 14/10 but they didn't stretch as much prior to doing this 14/10 thing before flowering.

Never really notice a difference on the stretch between MH and HPS. I do run 13/11 @ 60% RH for the first 3 weeks of flowering and In my observations that does help with the stretch.

Good point on the RH, I keep mine at around 60-65% through the stretch and drop it once they start to flower. Basically, I treat them as vegging plants during the stretch as that's essentially what they're doing as they're converting to flower mode. I feed them veg nutes for the first week, then mix veg+bloom for the second week, then bloom nutes to the end. I think all of it combined, including a longer lights-on period helps.

I use my MH for anything up to 2 weeks during transition.

It does help to reduce stretching a little.

2 things I have found to help reduce stretching further are
1. Temperature differences between day and night. Keep them as close to each other as possible and this will help to reduce stretch.

2. A lot folks don't realise it but a plants demands demand for nutrients during transition increases drastically and then reduces slightly once the stretch is over.
So feeding slightly heavier will also help.

This is a key time to be feeding them well, they can take a lot and like you say, demand it. Mine tend to dry up every 2 days during stretch in 5Gal pots, eventually they settle into 3 days or so before drying up.

I had some severe stretching last harvest, I was growing indicas and they just kept stretching. Wasn't sure what was up, thought it was the MH. Definately going to keep them tied down this time.

Thought I had a sea of green going, turned out to be a jungle. Sucky part was the yield was not like previous crops when I had the plants smaller and uniformed.I am trying a lower plant count to see what I can get out of a longer vegged and tamed plant.
