Doctors that'll sign for a minor(my son).

A bit of background -

My son, 15 years, old, suffers from severe depression, anxiety and ADD/ADHD. He also has pains related to multiple concussions, but we've never had that officially looked into, so I'm not going to go around claiming it's horrible now.

He's been bouncing around medications for a while, about a year and a half. During this time, he's been seeing a therapist and of course, a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist doesn't believe in medical marijuana, so that's a dead end.

I wouldn't be looking into medical marijuana for my son if I didn't truly believe that it will help him. He's the one who broached the topic with me, in a very respectful and open manner. We have a good relationship, and he knows to come to me when he's feeling "down" and such. He said that he's done a little bit of research and he'd like to look into it further with me, and of course I was willing to at least look into it. So we did, and I have to say, I genuinely think that it could help him.

He's admitted to me that he's smoked marijuana twice(to be honest, I'm not that angry, I'm just relieved that he's honest and open about these things to me), but expressed his concern about "street pot". Now, I have to agree on this. You don't really know what's in the pot you're getting off the street. I've heard horror stories of dealers putting horrible substances in their marijuana to get kids hooked... I don't want that. Apparently, my son in fact did notice the strong anti-anxiety effect that the marijuana had on him, and wants to pursue it further in a legal and somewhat safer way.

Now, my son is a good kid, alright? He was very reluctant to bring the subject of marijuana for medical use to my attention out of fear that I "might think he just wants to get high or something". I really don't think this is the case. My son has been hospitalized and sent to a medical ward for his depression & anxiety, and all he wants is to get better. He told me that he, again, is feeling very suicidal and he needs to find a way to find relief. He said that he doesn't want to smoke marijuana illegally, and that it actually adds to his anxiety because he's doing something against the law.

I've made calls and talked to his psychiatrist, and he will not sign for it. It's not about my son, it's the fact that he's a minor. I made a call to a couple compassion clubs in Toronto, and one woman literally laughed at me and called me crazy for wanting to help my son like this..

I'm aware of the medicinal properties of marijuana. I mean, I wasn't this aware of it, but for the last ten years I've been using it to treat my arthritis(which is completely different), and my depression(which isn't so different). I'm ashamed to say that I've never actually gotten a pass to get legal marijuana, I get it through illegal sources..which I don't want for my son.

So please, I'm just looking for someone. I've told him and I'll stand by my word: I'd go anywhere or do anything to help him.

We live in Oakville, Ontario. We're more than willing to fly over to Nova Scotia or wherever to get this done. I know I sound like a crazy-druggie mom, but I know that this is important to my son and I'm really worried for him and his future. He has panic attacks on a regular basis now, and no medications have been able to help. He also hates "artificial meds", for some reason. He says he doesn't like putting something so "fake" into his body to "alter his mood".

Any help would be amazing,

Thanks.

I commend you for being a open minded parent willing to educate yourself properly about cannabis for the greater good of your son. Your son will have a greater respect for you for doing so, who knows this could grow the bond greater, but seems you guy's have a great connection anyways. Good luck on your journey.

Thanks. I just wish it didn't have to be this tough to get the medicine some people might need.

At that age research indicates weed may be harmful due to the brain is still developing.
Although becoming legal maybe you would be able to acquire a high cbd no thc strain.
These I read are good for anxiety.

Yes, I'm fully aware of that. As far as I can tell from my research, the THC is the substance that causes the harm in young people, and the CBD has most of the medicinal qualities that my son is looking for. That's probably the first thing he brought up when talking to me about this :)

You have come to the right place. There are lots of really knowledgeable people here who will be able to direct you. I went through the do no harm clinic when I couldn't get my doc to increase my dose so I could cook with it. They are very helpful there. I can imagine that your son doesn't like taking the prescription pharmaceuticals because they mess with his head even more than he already feels. You don't sound like a crazy mom at all...you sound like a very concerned and loving parent. In the interim, not to encourage you to break the law, maybe try some compassion clubs for higher cbd strains. Let him use what he can to get him through the worst parts of the day. You can't live in fear of getting caught as much as it is a reality. Below the radar is a good place to be. And welcome!

I did ask them a few months ago, and they were still assessing their requirements. I'm sure they will have a policy by now, and if it's possible for them to do so, I suspect they will prescribe where appropriate. Yvonne is VERY helpful by phone or email. I dealt with them under MMAR, then they reviewed my proof of diagnosis before my appointment.

They MAY require proof of illness. If you don't have a diagnosis on paper, discussing the medications you have already tried might help.

Really don't want to get into a pissing match in Yessicat's help thread, but would have to disagree, I would like to see more research. I would concede that smoking cannabis at his age is not the best idea and can most likely cause harm and development problems in the brain , but from lack of O2. Cannabis is naturally produced in your body. Edibles would be my approach.

You and your son should take a trip to Israel after the conflict has settled down. They are light years ahead of the U.S in regard to cannabis. They prescribe cannabis to adolescence all the time there. Something like 100000 people are prescribed cannabis.

He's actually interested in edibles because baking is one of his hobbies(I don't mind, I get delicious brownies :) ).

Thanks for all the awesome replies, guys. We do have proof of illness, prescriptions, doctor's notes, and we could get more. I'm not sure about going to Israel though, I don't think the licence would be valid in Canada! I've told him that I won't hold it against him if he chooses to use marijuana illegally, and he says that he will only do so if he absolutely needs it(he's kind of scared of it due to the anti-weed campaigns in school, which I am 100% against because most of it isn't actually factual).

About the compassion clubs though; we've looked into C.A.L.M in Toronto, but of course, they require a Doctor's signature(which we can't get). I've sent an email to Do No Harm Clinic, hoping for good news! Thanks again!

Edit - Just for clarification, I'm all for drug-awareness in schools, but they told his class(I was there, actually) that when you smoke pot, you "have a 70% chance of instantly developing the early signs of schizophrenia". Seriously, I'm not joking. They said that.

Christ, that picture scared the crap out of me when it loaded. And yeah, I've told him that he has my permission to medicate illegally if he so chooses, but he wants to get legal. As his mother, I of course want him to get better..but it's not like I want him to be breaking the law if there's another way.

i'd just like dispel that horrific myth, and tell you that street weed is very unlikely to be laced with anything to get people hooked. or with other drugs for that matter (i heard that one a lot, you just gotta think; why? it'd just cost them more money to lace it with coke or something)

the reason street weed is looked down upon even by most of us (and there is decent illegal stuff, make no mistake) is mainly due to the shoddy habits of many growers, especially ones for profit.
your biggest concern is mainly molds. (white powder on leafs (like flour looking powder. not the trichomes ;) ) or brown buds, are dead giveaways)
but there's also chemicals it might've been sprayed with (to make it easier for a lazy grower)

not that that is a whole lot better, but i hope eases your mind some if this is your only route.

i hope you can find the relief you seek for your son.
also, keep an eye on him.. he's talking about hating taking the meds, make sure he doesn't go off them or anything without telling anyone. can be dangerous.

Yeah we've had many talks about this. I told him that until we find a way to get this all sorted out, I'd like it if he didn't just stop taking his meds. Once we do get legal though, he knows that he's going to have to gradually ween himself off meds etc. He's a pretty responsible kid so I'm not too worried.
