Wow this is stupid. I feel bad for people who do not understand how technology works. A 404 error means the page does not exist, and does not imply that it ever existed.

The wayback machine crawls links. It saves what it found on that date. If a website with high traffic posts a bullshit link, the wayback machine will still crawl it and save what it finds as long as the page loads (even if its a custom 404 page). If the link was dead the first time they found it, chances are good it never existed.

I don't feel bad for those journalists. The way they died sucks, but they knew the risk they were taking by going to a place that so strongly and publicly hates Americans. They had no reasonable expectation of safety whatsoever. The way people are reacting is pretty stupid too. It's like they expect that every time an American wanders into an enemy country and gets himself killed we have to go to war to avenge them. DON'T THEY KNOW THAT US AMERICANS CAN GO WHEREVER WE WANT?
