Was related to his running water through it, and seeing brown - may not be root slime, but could be brown algae not bound to roots.. hence why I recommended peroxide, unless he really doesn't care enough to change / fix, then it'll be a hell of a teaching tool.

If this was my setup... I'd go down to Home Depot go to the pond section and buy Sludge Remover. Use it for two weeks and it should clear it up. At least it worked for me.
However I DO NOT use this stuff during flower. Just paranoid I suppose.
