Why do people buy the idea that enemies can be bombed into submission?

This goes all the way back to ancient times, the general idea being that you can defeat an enemy by killing him. I certainly agree, you can kill a person who holds the ideals and beliefs of your enemy, but the enemy still persists. Why? Because you can't kill an idea with military force, no matter how strong it is.

This is something I feel doesn't compute to most Americans. Most humans are emotional creatures, most of us base most of our decisions on emotion; what we feel is "right" at the time. The people demanding action in Syria over James Foley's murder is a good example. Same thing with Daniel Pearl.. People act mostly out of instinct, in the moment, and governments rely on this to push agendas.

So what happens if you kill every single member of the IS? They have families, loved ones, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, fathers, mothers.. what happens to them? What happens to the sons who lose their fathers?


They become terrorists. We create them, through our offensive actions.

Bottom line; you can't defeat the IS, or any enemy, by military might.

No matter how big the force, the ideal will persist.


So this is the purpose of the thread; What do we gain by fighting the IS?

It's funny you mention Daniel Pearll as it relates to this thread...

He was murdered by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Mohammed killed him to prove to American intelligence he wasn't a fat little joke of a man with a KFC fetish.

But i will say that carpet bombing another country is typical of how America conducts war - regardless of the result.

There's more than a few JDAM videos on youtube that show flying body parts - is why they're a big hit. :D

Well I have seen bombing make men run out of fighting holes and beg to be taken prisoner. In the First Gulf war we bombed them for 40 days and 40 nights. It broke them down and we won in short order. Does bombing work yes. I prefer Carpet Bombing myself, eliminate the grid square then move on to the next one

My unit called in 90 percent of the Airstrikes on Hwy 80 the Hwy of death. What they don't mention in this video is that as they were retreating they were also firing at us with all the weapon they had. So does bombing work hell yes. And as an infantry man I want them to bomb those fucker back into the stone age before they make me go in and fight the rest of them

Really good on bombing at the end he speaks of a conversation with General Lemay he said do you need to killing a 100,000 people in one night, Lemay's answer was yes, would you rather we not kill that many and have our men attack the beaches and be slaughtered is that the right thing to do?
