First Hydro Setup, having some unknown issues.

Hey Guys!

I've been growing in soil indoors for awhile now and things seem to be going OK with this. But, in the interest of growing faster and getting better yields, I have just purchased an ebb & flow table and setup a basic system in my tent. The clones that I've put in this table were all in soil in red solo cups and had to be transplanted into the hydro system. I only put a few of them into the tray and left the rest in the solo cups for now so that I could verify that this hydro tray would work. They have been in the hydro tray for about a week now and they're starting to get quite discolored. There are a number of possibilities that I think we could be having problems with, but I would really, really appreciate it if someone with more experience could possibly tell me what I'm doing incorrectly.

Here are some photos of the setup (5 photos, 2 up close of leaves, 2 of plants, 1 of reservoir):

Some things I think could be wrong/causing the discoloration on the leaves :
  • Not enough clay pebbles in tray to cover roots and provide water effectively?
  • Hydroponics nutrient problem? (too much nutrient solution? Used measured amount from bottle but my water is fairly brown)
  • Perhaps the quality of initial water is a problem? For this particular fill of the reservoir I had to use city water. I have a reverse osmosis system but it's currently out of commission. Is it extremely important to use distilled water here?
  • Another point is because these are translated from soil in red solo cups, the roots are not inside a rockwool cube of any type. I was hoping that the water at the bottom of the tray and the pebbles would keep it hydrated enough- but I'm not certain now if this is the case.

So, essentially...any tips or ways I could tell what is happening to my plants would be awesome. I've googled quite a bit but sometimes it's just difficult to apply it to the real world without an example. I'm hoping someone with more experience will have already been through this and have the know-how to set me off in the right direction.

Please let me know if there is anything I can answer or provide to help diagnose the plants.

Thank you!!!

i didnt finish your post.
"you.just want the cup,but you dont want the race."
you need to read.much much more..
and get more equipment.
you need a tri-meter for your nute solution.never follow manufacturers reccommendations on mixing nutes.if they had their way, youd use a gallon of pure solution for every teaspoon of water...use a feeding chart, with an e.c./ppm meter,or trimeter,to get to the correct dosage..
get a water chiller.
read read read read read..
thats all i can give you for now..im sure someone else will stop by soon to help..or make fun..good luck!

yeah rory is right with hydro theres no room for mistakes or your plants will suffer u def need a ph meter if your ph ant right it will lock out nutez and cause problems, how many times a day are you flooding your table with no rockwool cubes you will have to do it more offten i use cubes so i flood 4 times a day but i heard of people with just hydroton flooding every hour, u also want to only start off with 1/4 strength nutez also, as far as the out of the solo cup and into hydro i have done this also and it worked fine i had to rinse all the dirt off before i put into cube but it worked and if useing citywater fill up some jugs and let sit for a couple days or pet store has chemical drops for fish tanks that i read works also but i dont think thats ur problem i cant see your pics either if it was to much nutez your leaf tips would be burnt, can you give me sum more info how much nutez do u use? are u checking ph? how offten do u flood?

One of he many problems filling a tray with hydroton (or any medium) is you can't move your plants around

Next time put them in large net pot lids

I replaced h'tron long ago with polished ornamental stone from Dollar Store.

Works great, easy to clean roots out and reuse

Drop by my thread to see it in action
