Older magnetics last a long time but they run alot hotter than a new style digital.
The digital ones are supposed to be more effecient with power consumption and dispersion.

I would suggest a digital switchable dimmable ballast. Might cost a couple bucks more but its nice to have options.
If u get 1000w u can use it as a 400 700 or 1000 in either mh or hps
All u change is the bulb and turn the knob.

Just my .2 cents

torontoke nailed it ..^^^ besides many of the digital models can be dialed down for early germing
when the plants are small, also many if not all models now go Mh and HPS
less heat lighter, and less humming noise ..leap to them ...lol

Unless you have apply supply parts you ain't fixing ...jack, true they do last longer only cause the parts are from the Korean war ...lol ..they should be cheap to buy .. should be, also some may still come in kit form ..google as there was a company that sold only kits at a fraction of the price ..lost it myself tho!

Magnetics usually have a capacitor blow out. Most shops can fix them for 50 bucks or you can buy the part for 35 and do it yourself. 2 wires. 5 minute fix.

Caps are so easy to fix. Buy a soldering kit a radio shack and you're set.
funny thing they shut down our local radio shack after somebody pulled an inside job and cleaned the place out completely of everything dumb ass used his pass code or card to shut down the security system which let them know it was him lol.i will just get one at home depot or ebay.

That guys a fucking idiot. Their stores are stacked with goods. I doubt they make enough to operate.
Probably just a tax write off for a much bigger fish.
