Fully Loaded PC (94 W CFL) MK ultra + Trainwreck Short Veg!!

Alright guys so I refurbished my old pc grow box, but I ended up giving that one to my buddy who has some seeds he needs to grow out. I then decided that I would still be interested in a pc grow over a full sized cab (just for logistical reasons). So I found this old (ancient) computer case which I gutted:

After building my last one with a new computer case this one was actually much better to work with, the metal was substantial and didnt bend every time I touched it. Also the slide over case will help to get this thing light proof eventually.

So what I did was made a custom fixture for about $15 that makes 4 cfls just barely fit in this case (as far as I have seen the most wattage in a computer case has been 70 watts which is either 3 CFLs or I have seen a 70 watt HID in a cooltube for a double tall pc case).

The bulbs are
2 x 23 watt 5500k
1 x 25 watt 2700k
1 x 23 watt 2700k

total of 94 watts!

I made a custom soil mixture which is 2 parts perlite, 2 parts vermi soil, and 1 part generic organic potting soil (essentially fine mulch)

I used this blend because these plants are clones and I didnt want to burn them by placing them into 100% vermi soil, I intend to get these plants into flowering within 10 days and I will supplement with nutrients as needed (The Earth Juice Line).

The Trainwreck is on the left and MK ultra on the right, got these rooted clones from a friend. Never grown either of these but im especially excited because MK ultra is 50% OG kush (Dankalicious) and trainwreck is one of my favorite smokes as well as fast to harvest!!! super stoked.

Im going to keep em on 24 hours for 3 days to help adjust to their new homes, then my plan is to get em on 18/6 for 4-7 days. Basically I want to have them topped and give them 1 or 2 days of 18/6 then flip to 12/12 to just get this show on the road.

Last time I grew OG Kush in a pc box which was a tiny bit smaller with 69 watts and vegged it out for like 30 days, the plant ended up burning itself during flowering even with daily training cause it grew so fast. So Im going to avoid that problem this time by limiting the veg to only what is necessary to get the clones healthy for flowering.

Some other general improvements I have made to this PC box compared to my other 2 iterations are internally contained power plug for increased stealth, as well as more exhaust to be able to get the plants closer to the lights previously had the same fan on 9v now on 12v.

As for lighting improvements I have increased my total lighting from 69 watts to 94 watts as well as putting 90% reflective mylar on the ceiling just above the lights in order to act as a reflector.

This is the height the plants will sit at for 1 or 2 more days, at which point I am going to make my best effort to keep the lights about 1-1.5" away from the plant for the rest of the grow.

Thats all for now, more updates to come!

Thanks uzerneims!

So today I finished up putting mylar on the inside of the case, making it even more light efficient and completely lightproof now save for the exhaust fan. (carbon filter to be installed soon should black it out as well).

You can see where I didnt put mylar to act as the passive intake

From what it looks like the trainwreck is already growing but the MK has shown no signs so it may be in transplant shock, it should also be noted that the roots of the MK were already popped out the bottom of the rockwool where the trainwrecks roots hadnt breached the bottom of its rockwool cube yet. Im wondering if this has anything to do with contributing to shock?

Alright so I had to go out of town this weekend and upon returning home it was unfortunate (actually quite impressive in the long run, will get to this later) to see that my plants were having some serious issues:
1) I underestimated the light these plants could handle, made the mistake of leaving them 2" from the lights for too long at too young of a stage. ...what a mouthful.
This caused the plants to be curled up due to the light intensity, and I know its not a heat issue because the exhaust is around 70 degrees and that comes from the hottest (uppermost) part of the case.
2) The MK ultra had a serious spider mite infestation on a few leaves, there are only 3 things I hate in this world so far: Poison Oak, Mosquitoes, and Spidermites. They had also migrated in small numbers to the trainwreck.

OK so there was a problem... now what did I do to fix it?

First I immediately sprayed the plants and inside of the case with a 1% solution of take down garden spray, and I mean I sprayed the tops and undersides of the plants, the soil surface, the mylar walls, and even the runoff catch pans. Second of all I trimmed off any seriously light damaged or spidermite infested leaves, which was a lot unfortunately, and then fed the plants a light solution of B vitamins to help reduce the shock from trimming and the damage they already took. Before I put the plants back in I took out a couple books to lower the canopy for now and also replaced my 25 watt 5500k with a 13watt 5500k light which should help reduce the intensity alongside the increased distance.

Here are pics of the MK ultra, trainwreck, and the full case (respectively) after treatment and adjustments.

Why I was actually impressed instead of sad:
During my last pc grow with 69 watts of cfl and no sort of reflector aside from the natural refelctiveness of the computer case metal, I could keep my OG kush plant (a notoriously finicky strain) within 1/2 inch of the lights and it would have no problems. What this says to me is that the new design is packing much more of a lighting punch with the extra light and mylar reflector combined. This means that my harvest should have a larger payoff than before due to much higher effective lighting from the mylar and bonus wattage combined. Now I just need to get these plants healthy and a little more mature before I can start testing how close I can get them (I will make sure I'm not out of town this time so I can manage the problem quickly before any damage is done).

Its times like this that a certain quote comes to mind.

"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow."

Ok so as of right now the plants are recovering, they are now growing at a solid rate but I think they were lacking micronutes due to my growing medium (they are very light green atm). Also I need to get more circulation going inside of the case because powdery mildew is growing on the soil surface, in order to treat this I gave them a watering today with their normal grow mix, micronutrients, aloe vera (anitfungal properties), and vinegar (antifungal properties) to bring the pH down to 6.5.

Will post some pics later, hopefully they will look healthier for the camera!

Ouch spidermites already, that sucks.

The powdery mildew is from the surface being too wet. Let it dry out between waterings.

I hope they pull through this rough stretch.
