I have always had success by doing 12hrs in a cup of distilled water. Then another 12hrs using damp paper towel. I take two paper plates put the paper towels/seeds in between. Then put that in a plastic bag, not sealed. Then leave in a warm place for 12hrs. I put it on top of my cable box, works every time. Check it every 4 hours. Once it cracks and you see the root, plant it. How deep are you planting the seed? Only should be about 1/2 inche deep, 1 inch at most.

Man, I have only ever had 1 seed not sprout out of at least 20... All I do is get my little cup of soil, wet it completely down, make a hole about 1/4", put the seed in, cover it back up, and most the top with a spray bottle. Works like a charm. Usually within the first 3-4 days it's popping out of the soil!

you should really plant it only the depth of the seed, so it should not be planted very deep. you just want the soil to cover the seed and it will do its thing, just wet the soil with a spray bottle
You have to make sure the paper towel package is sealed in a big baggie while your beans germ. You want real high humidity. If you see condensation inside the bag when you check that is a good thing. Also, I germ seeds on the top shelf of a dark room. I've had better luck keeping them dark and soggy.

This same thing just happened to me. I planted three seeds in peat pellets after soaking in water for 24 hours. Two sprouted, but one just cracked and never sprouted. Seemed to have a hard time breaking out of the shell. I eventually messed with it so much that the tap root broke and it died. I popped another seed by soaking it for 24 hours then putting it in a paper towel inside a baggie. It sprouted, but is having a hard time shedding the shell still. It's in a solo cup with peat now. I'll leave it be for a few more days before I intervene. I guess it's strain and batch dependent. I've never had a problem before this.
I guess I would try the sand paper trick to rough up the seed if I were to plant more of these seeds.

Put seeds in a moist paper towel, moistened with luke warm water. Fold the towel over on itself, then put in a ziploc bag to maintain moisture level. Put this ziploc in the cupboard above your fridge, and ignore it for 48 hours.
I have great success like this.
I also have great success by placing my seeds directly into soil. This method requires care though, as you don't want to over water.

Plant in medium. In dirt up to half inch deep is fine.
It is a plant that has plenty of time to figure out how to grow.
They more you mess with a seed the more the very fine roots get damaged.
If a seed can't push through a half inch of dirt it is weak.
That is how it pulls the seed shell from its self.

the paper towel method has a really high success rate, usually also exhale into the bag to supply some co2, and leave it on top of a cable box wrapped in a black sock(if your box is in direct light you might want to use 2 layers, they really need darkness). usually takes 2-3 days, then breaks the soil in 1-2, dont plant it far down, id put it a very small layer of dirt over it and keep it pretty damp.
also handle the seeds with care, those roots are fragile. check on them every day so they dont root into the towel, and keep it damp.
those seed may have not been viable, email the site you ordered from and tell them they didnt germ.

1. Find tupperware
2. Wet paper towel with filtered water RO and wring out
3. fold wet paper towel and place at bottom of tupperware
4. Put seeds on top and DO NOT fold paper towel over them
5. spray the seeds a couple times with water
6. Place on top of router or a heat mat (router should be warm)
7. place a towel over the tupperware to block light
8. Check in a couple of days for a tap root
So far I've germed 30+ seeds with only one failing to germ and I doubt it was because of the method. I think this is is the most foolproof method personally. No need to soak in water

With the colder temps I've had to start using a small germination kit with the heating mat. I was using the paper towel method in the summer and it worked great, not when it started getting cold. I was trying to germinate a lot of other seeds (non MJ) as it got colder and was having a hell of a time for some reason. It was the temps, after I bought the germination station I've been busting out peppers, lettuce, tomatoes etc like they are going out of style.

Exactly what I do - the sock lol. Cable box seems to be the perfect warmth and creates the perfect humidity in the bag. Just popped 7/7 seeds. Just make sure the papertowels are nice and moist (not wet)
