Miracle Grow Organic Soil?

I don't know why some people hate MG so much...i grew some potent buds with MG.

Because its a poor craftsman that blames his tools.

A tool is only limited by the hands it's in.

Its the norm for a newbie to use MG. First grows are usually less then spectacular. MG is an easy target then to blame their abilities.

Congrats. Looks like a tasty bud

I am currently on my first grow and i'm using MG organic, MG perlite, with a dash of MG potting soil.......my babies look beautiful! It shouldn't hurt but i think the biggest mistake with MG is forgetting they have a bunch of nutes and people don't compensate.

But if mine look fine and i'm a newb i don't think you'll have any issues!

:peace:

i bought a bag a while back..damn shit had fungus gnats all in it. i dumped some out onto a white surface and there was also microscopic larvae along with gnat hatchlings jumping around. i would recommend sterilizing this shit by baking it in the oven around 250-275º for an hour, inside of a tin pan covered with foil. add some water to moisten and to keep it from burning up. it works the same way as sterilizing mushroom compost/substrate to kill any foreign bacteria and insects. healthy bacteria will regenerate naturally by the time the seedling takes root.

i know this sounds like a pain, but it can sometimes be tough to find decent potting soil during the winter months..so you have to adapt and conquer ;)

same thing happened to me a few months ago i usually use my own compost with no problems but had used it all before i needed more. i saw the "organic MG" and tried it about a week later i had gnats allover i knew it was that damn soil lately i've been keeping up on my compost so at least i know what im working with. i guess it could have happened with any soil but the thing is it was the MG ORGANIC that did it

theres no way in hell it came from my house..when the first thing i did after buying it was opening it when i got home - only to find it infested with fungus gnats! i highly doubt that gnats can infest an entire bag of potting soil in less than 10 minutes...lol

beware of stores that keep the potting soil indoors during the winter months..gnats get inside of the bags during the summer and they lay eggs in the compost. if the bags are outside during the winter, the larvae has no chance of surviving the cold temps so you wont have to bake the potting soil.

theres a HUGE difference between a house gnat and a fungus gnat.

this is a fungus gnat -

it resembles a mosquito and nests in damp/warm soil. it cant survive longer than 5 days and the only place it can regenerate in a home usually is in SOIL. not garbage or anything related... they lay microscopic larvae and those hatch and jump around on the base of moist soil. i have other plants in the house that would've been infested by now have these come from my home and not the potting mix that was purchased. other plants in different rooms have yet have to problems and i would've had some issues by now if i didn't sterilize before using it.

edit: fyi - im referring to the MG Organic Choice. the cheap ass bags they package it in gets holes really easy at the stores and who knows wtf gets in it. thats why i recommend sterilizing it somehow, by exposing your vermiculite/potting soil mix to extreme temps of hot or cold to kill any insects or bacteria that might eat up the seedling's roots/nutrition. then mix in the perlite or whatever else

pfffffffft

good point i spouted off b4 reading the whole thing. If any soil is stored improperly it will get gnats and larve.carefull not to buy bags with holes in them.but regaurdless thats not mg fault. its the vendors improper care.

This is absolutely MG's fault. They are doing something wrong. I tried a few bags and everyone was loaded with bugs. Do a Google search and you'll see it is very common.

why dude????? i allready said. i dont have that problem and ive used the organic and moisture control potting soil.so again i will state for the slower members here.ITS NOT M.G. FAULT.poor storage , ripped bags etc etc. is the cause for the gnat problem.

i know what your saying bonghits and i agree. common places such as Lowes toss the bags around like there nothing..i spotted several bags with holes in them at least 1/4inch in size. it only takes a pin sized hole for gnats and other insects to get in. The only thing MG could possibly do is put the contents in more sturdy bags..but then again it all ends up in the hands of the retailer. improper storage/treatment of compost can only result in total crap...especially if its organic! bugs will infest it faster than they will compost that has man-made nutrients

i also side with Picasso..MG can be hit and miss, but not knowing the history of where contents was composted and packaged..i guess we end up paying the price in the long run :(

The bags have holes in them by design.

I used MG time release potting soil (up to 3 months feed),(didnt have any money at the time so it was my only choice) it worked pretty good for the most part........the only thing that I did different is before I put my plant in it I added half perlite and flooded the shit outta the soil with plan water then let it dry out for a few days (2 gal bucket). then added my plant to the moist soil and watered. only problem is the time release nutes....... wassnt sure when to add more, plant grew about 4 foot till the fucker turned out to be a male....... all in all MG works when you are in a pinch but hard to get full potential of plants with out burning them.

true. but there should only be a few pin head sized holes at the top of them so the contents can breathe..not 1/4" holes big enough for compost to fall out. its unlikely that gnats will be able to fit in the production holes of MG bags..but if it were made of stronger material then it wouldnt be so easy for the vendors to stab and rip open when unloading or moving the bags. imo...

the best o.g. soil i've used is Roots Organics, it's local, but I'm pretty sure they're national now, in a camo bag. the shit is really nice and easy to use, although I feed 1/2 stregnth cause their dirt already has alot of nutrients
