Grow room security/ ADT against mmj

I signed a contract with ADT last week, installation is scheduled for tomorrow. Security for the house and the garage. My mmj grow is in the garage, I planned on the motion sensor for the garage to go in the lung room. Well, surfing around online I came across this

http://www.tokeofthetown.com/2013/01/alarm_co_cancels_contract_with_aids_patient_becaus.php

So should I just have him put the motion sensor in the garage and then move it myself into the lung room? Not even let him in the garage? Cancel my contract, I think I'd have to tell them why, I don't know if I want to do that.

Opinions appreciated.

Uhh... are you legal? Pretty sure ADT would be calling the 5-0 if something tripped that alarm when you weren't around.

Cancel the contract, if you even can, and screw telling them "why". You just can't afford it. You thought you were getting a raise. You just got fired. You bought a gun instead.

I've got 10+ years installing security, cameras, fire alarms, access control, and network. PM me with any questions/consultation. If it's a wireless motion, definitely have then put it in the garage. It's no big deal to open and move your self. If anybody else wants the EXACT same system, hit me up, I can send you one programmed with wireless sensors, siren and keypad, if your into mounting the equipment yourself. I can definitely beat the prices. No monitoring contracts.

If they know there is mmj they will not secure your property legal or not, (that's in the article I posted) I happen to be legal.

Canceled.... I had till midnight tonight, the third day after I signed.

Going to costco to buy some cameras and a dvr, then I'll figure out a motion alarm/siren.
Good idea on the cancel, ADT are parasitic. Just be careful with the cost of cams. Look up when you walk in the door at costco.....definitely not the same cameras your buying there. Wonder why? Costco would like to be able to id intruders, and they don't care if you can. There are a lot of great cheaper products, just not that cheap. But if you do go that route. Try to keep all of your camera shots no more than 10 ft.

You definitely want a networkable Dvr, that you can view your cams with an app, most dvrs have this capability bow a days, but I'm not sure on costco.

Stay away from ADT. They are a fucking joke of a company. I always get pissed at ADT whenever they route me to replace batteries on sensors and make me charge the customers $75 - $100 dollars for parts & labor. And it's not like they are young people with extra cash laying around, these are elderly people on a fixed income. Also, their MMR (Monthly Monitoring Rates) are beyond rip-off. They charge up the ass for old, out dated huge clunky hardwired systems that communicates through landlines, while their competitors charge $30-$40 for newer wireless system that communicates through a cellular module where you can activate/deactivate your entire system from any web-enabled device, free of charge.

Assuming there's going to be high intense lighting in your garage, I would advise against putting the motion detector in their for the sake of preventing a false alarm. The thing people do not know about a motion detector is, IT DOES NOT DETECT MOTION. It is a infrared device and detects heat. Once the system is armed, the motion shoots out a invisible grid and if so many blocks inside that grid is lit up by a heat source, regardless from lights, body heat, pets, etc. it triggers the alarm. Also, if your garage gets really hot during the summer, you're going to get non-stop false alarm.

If you decide to go with cameras, get a IP cam that has the ability to connect to your home network and broadcast live feed. That way, when you are away from home, you can use your smartphone (assuming you have fast 3G connection or 4G) to check in from time to time. Just something to think about. Good luck.

I appreciate the time everyone spent in responding to my post, I really do. I didn't make it camera shopping, I was hoping to while I was out today. I did get some steel and I spent this afternoon fashioning a cage in front of the wall ac. I still need to put some crossbars ( and clean up ((yikes)). I did all the prefab outside of the garden that I possibly could. I still had to do some welding inside the lung room, as well as drill the concrete. I should've put down a little water. Better a little bit of smoke and dust go through the garden than the garden get robbed!
I have 140 something cfm exhaust fans on both of my cabinets, so it cleared out within minutes.

I'm looking into simplisafe diy security, and other self instal systems as well as building my own alert system. Still looking into cameras as well. Again I appreciate all your guy's time. I'll update with what I go with.

It won't load the pic I was trying to share of the cage. I'll try again.

Wow, that is really cool.......sure wish I knew how to weld!
When I bought this place it came with ADT already installed and they tried to coerce me into keeping the existing contract, threatened to rip out all the hardware/wiring and sensors, lol. I said come get them, I am NOT keeping ADT, period. I live in tim-buk-to and 10yrs later I have never heard back from them nor did they make an appearance.
I ended up paying a K for a custom(welded, lol) gate....and I have a wireless cam I use for the drive and 'shop.'

What you are doing should work as a good deterrent, but still don't rule out a good quality cam!
peace

There's a bunch like simplisafe, basically the same thing I offered, that's a decent option if you want something super simple and DIY. If your in an unfriendly state where the fuzz ain't going to be your friend if you report someone stole your crop, think for sure about at least one cam that will allow you to identify the perp yourself. Like I said before, the cheapos suck, just like your crop, quality in is quality out, but you can get into an AXIS brand IP camera (top of the industry) you can just plug into your router, and view it anywhere via Internet. Also many of there models have an ST slot that will get you a few days worth of storage right on the camera you can just pop out and view if there is ever an incident. This set up may run about $250 for one camera. That's about as cheap as I'd go. I'm installing 36 Axis cams today. I've worked with bosch, honeywell, speco, sony, GE, Dynapel, Clinton, IQEye, ArecontVision, and many other brands both pro and consumer, and nothing touches there combination of picture quality and embedded software.

I dunno. I have broadband. No experience with slower inet. Maybe call Uniden?
Here's a very thorough review of the setup I got:

Hey man, you do need "high speed Internet at home for them to work reliably, but more important is having a strong connection I.e. 4G or wifi On Your Smart Device or else you will definitely see lag the the minimum or no picture at all worst case.

Listen to HayStax. I've worked with ADT, Vivint, and Monitronics, installing security systems & IP cameras and HayStax speaks the IP cam lingo so it seems he knows what he's talking about. For best live feed results, your camera and mobile phone data connection has to both have high speed connection (though it's not necessarily required). The faster the connection, the smoother the video.

@ Aeroknow, I have to agree with HayStax, been around too much cameras to know those type of Costco camera are crap.

I'm definitely listening to hayStax and will have to PM him when I am closer to having the money for purchase. Just had to buy a dehui with all the rain here. So it'll be next month.

I'm sure those costco cameras are great if you just want to see if someone is in the area in front of the lens huh? Just not clear enough to see exactly whats going on or make out identity at all? They must serve work out for some. I want quality, where I can zoom in on old footage and look at the details on ones face.

Correct. Those Costco camera, I consider it more of like a baby cam than anything. It's only good if you're at home and needs to know when someone is entering/exiting. Axis, as well as Bosch, Vivotek, Samsung, etc. and many other manufacturers make such HD ceiling cameras that pans and tilts 180 degrees or a full 360 with autofocus, night vision, digital and/or optical zooming, motion and/or audio detection/recording, on board or removable storage memory, etc. or a combination of all of these. The options are endless, you just have to know which features you want. But of course I'm sure you already know these can be pretty pricey. Well good luck and great build by the way. Sort of looks like a jail. LOL ;)
