What should I do about water?

So I have hard water and it's treated with salt, it is then passed through a carbon filter in my fridge, but after just 3 waterings I can already see a white build up on the surface of the soil, like I was told I would see, I was told that even with the carbon filter it would still have a negative impact on the plants. Is this true? What else can I do besides buy cooler water?

All hard water is not created equal. What is the make up of yours? Under 250 and mostly Mg/Ca you are probably ok. High Fe and Na not so much. I would not use softened water, plants dislike sodium (that's why it's not a good idea to pee on them but I digress).

I'd try to bypass your water softener and see if they react better to that or get an RO filtration unit.

fill a bucket from the hose outside. that bypasses the water softener in the house. let it sit in you room overnight. try that before you go buy bottled water.

The outdoor faucets in most homes bypass the water softener. Check those out.

Ok I'll try to get the readings from the softener guys and if it's no good I will definitely consider the RO unit. Thanks for letting me know that the hose will bypass the softener, will definitely try that.

I will also pose this to you guys, there's a green fungus growing on the surface soil, now I've seen this before growing and the plants still made it to fruition, but does anybody know what it is and should I try to remove it, I know cinnamon will work but may also kill good organisms.

Do you now the PPMs of your water? Are you growing outdoors or indoors?

You can get RO at WallyWorld for 37 cents a gallon. Use it to cut your tap water. Get the PPM's under 100 and you should be golden.

you don't tell us what soil you use but more than likely it is nothing to worry about. happens alot

Use De-nautred water - water you set out (let stand) for 24 hours and then use -you will have no problems and no extra costs!!! and it is simple
