So your 'advice' is to pat him on the head and tell him he got away with stealing from his own family?!Let him keep it ..He probably deserved it anyway. ..from now on make sure he doesn't take anymore. . Give him his 5500 dollar raise. ..and never give him another raise again...it sucks but money's just paper family is what's important....

I just dealt with a similar situation; the lawyer and the Come to Jesus meeting are excellent ideas. He understands he pays back what he stole or he's done on the spot- with criminal charges.
Then find a replacement and train him to replace the thief; then if he ever snags a dime that isn't his again, the replacement will already be there and trained.
No one person or no one thing should be so critical to your business that letting them go threatens the whole operation. You have quite a range of interests and no one should be irreplaceable- not even you.
