Just curious, do they teach about the Age of Enlightenment in US high schools or just civil war and stuff...
Ever heard of Spinoza? On the Chair's table in the dutch parliament is Spinoza's book Tractatus theologico-politicus the most representative of the beliefs and ethics of the Dutch.
He was banned from the Jewish community, they responded unusually harsh to the claims of Spinoza, no immortal soul, religion being old bullshit and many other things I and many other atheist fortunately consider common sense nowadays.
Enlightenment, partly about being against intolerance by amongst others religions. It's made us what we are.
